CALL TO ORDER Chair Linda Smith called the September 20, 2011, meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. In Attendance Members: Linda Smith, Chair, Margie Albritton, Robin Jones, Adria Krail, Nicole Wicks City of Renton Staff: Karen Bergsvik, Dianne Utecht, Laila McClinton, Carol Allread Absent Alicia Glenwell, Charles Gray, Rob Spier, Vice-Chair, Elizabeth Stevens I II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES A motion was made by Robin, and seconded by Adria to approve the August minutes as written. All were in favor, motion carried, minutes approved as submitted. III. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BLOCK GRANT(CDBG) PUBLIC HEARING: Linda Smith, Committee Chair, opened a public hearing for the allocation of 2012 funds. It is proposed that the 2012 CDBG funds be allocated to the following projects: • $11,130 to the Institute for Family Development, Parents and Children Together • $27,251 to the Multi-Service Center to provide Emergency Assistance • $145,847 for the Housing Repair Assistance Program • $38,381 in Planning and Administration funds to administer the program With no public comments,the public hearing was closed. IV. AGENCY PRESENTATIONS Multi-Service Center(MSC) Manuela Ginnett, MSC, spoke to the Committee about the Emergency Shelter Transitional Housing Program, the General Education Program, and the Emergency Assistance Program. MSC offers family shelter,transitional housing, and helps prevent homelessness. They work with community partners to provide ESL and GED classes. They also help with rent and utility payment assistance. City of Renton � � Human Services Advisory Committee Minutes September 20,2011 Page 2 of 3 Senior Services Dale Hoover, Senior Services, explained the Volunteer Transportation Program, Meals on Wheels, and the Community Dining Program. There are about thirty volunteers in Renton who provide a ride and escort seniors to medical appointments. Meals on Wheels helps seniors remain healthy and independent by delivering nutritious meals to their homes. Community Dining is offered at the Renton Senior Activity Center, which creates an opportunity for seniors to socialize, and also connect to other needed services. Last year, 17,205 meals were served. St. Vincent de Paul Lani Cavit and Karen Sauver presented information about St. Vincent de Paul, which operates out of St. Anthony's Parish. They are a volunteer based agency. Those seeking help call the main helpline, and intake specialists connect callers with their local St. Vincent de Paul. Services offered include help with rent, utilities, food, and professional case management. It is not a requirement for clients to be Catholic in order to receive services;they just need to live within the boundaries of the parish. Wav Back Inn Della Shane, Way Back Inn, gave an overview of the program. With only 1.5 staff, they rely mostly on volunteers to keep 11 homes maintained for homeless families with children. Families can stay for up to ninety days while they work toward obtaining permanent housing. They also help with rental and utility assistance. Washinaton Women's Emplovment and Education (WWEE) Naqueeb Anderson shared that the mission of WWEE is to help low income individuals gain the skills, knowledge, and courage to be self supporting and gain ' employment. They offer a four week intensive training at the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) in Renton. The training includes job readiness skills, time management, and budgeting. They also provide a free professional wardrobe through their Clothing Boutique. V. RECOGNITION OF ROLF Linda thanked the members that were able to attend funeral services for Rolf. The Committee wants to honor the contributions Rolf made to the Human Services Advisory Committee during his many years of service. A decision about what to do was tabled until the November meeting, since site visits are scheduled for the October meeting and many members were absent today. VI. VACANCIES ON COMMITTEE � There are two positions open for the Committee. One is for a youth member. Volunteers are needed for a sub-committee to interview the applicants and make � recommendations. Recruitment will begin soon and continue through October, and then the interviewing process will begin. Karen will email the application to current Committee members to forward to people that they think would be good for the open positions. VII.SURVEY RESULTS FOR FOURTH WORKSHOP. EVALUATION FROM SECOND WORKSHOP Feedback from a survey to the agencies determined that the fourth Capacity Building training will be Recruiting and Sustaining a Great Board. This workshop will be held October 26,from 1:00-4:00 p.m. Grant Writing 201 came in a close second and those survey respondents are encouraged to contact Nathan Phillips, Capacity Building Consultant, for one-on-one assistance in this topic area. The evaluation results from the second workshop indicate that the participant satisfaction rate remains high for the training Nathan is providing. VIII. RESOURCE FAIR Adria gave an update on the second Annual Bridging the Gap Resource Fair happening on Saturday, October 1, at the Renton Pavilion Event Center. Sponsors for the event are City of Renton, Renton Housing Authority(RHA), King County Housing Authority(KCHA), Seattle Housing Authority(SHA), and the YWCA. Donations of gift cards and gift baskets are needed for drawings that will be held during the event. Flyers have been printed and are being distributed throughout the community. IX.
