1 .0 PURPOSE:
To establish a policy/procedure for approval and notification of street
closures due to construction, repair or utility installation.
2.0 ORGANIZATIONS AFFECTED:
Public Works, Police and Fire Departments.

4.0 POLICY:
It shall be the policy of the City of Renton in the interest of public
safety to allow street closures for repair, construction, and utility
installation according to the procedures contained within this
document. The policy applies to all agencies conducting construction,
repair, and utility installation on City of Renton street rights-of-way
i.e. , King County Public Works, Pacific Northwest Bell , Washington
Natural Gas, Group W Cable, Puget Power, etc. ).
5.0 DEFINITIONS:
Not applicable.
6.0 PROCEDURE:
6.1 Partial Street Closures:
Whenever possible, access for emergency vehicles shall be
provided immediately around a construction area. Access provided

shall be such that imposed loads of fire vehicles can be
sustained.
Access way shall be minimum 15' wide clear way.
6.2 Full Street Closures:
When, because of unusual circumstances, access for emergency
vehicles cannot be provided around a construction site, advance
approval for a full street closure shall be obtained from the
Police and Fire Departments so that acceptable alternative
measures can be developed.
6.3 Notification and Inspection:
6.3.1 It shall be the responsibility of the appropriate Public
Works representative or Utility Official to assure that
the party performing the proposed construction work notify
the Police Department, Traffic Sergeant, Fire Department,
and Valley Communications Center at the numbers listed
below:

6.3.2 Traffic control and safety measures shall be maintained as
approved by the Public Works and Police Departments.
6.3.3 City construction inspectors shall verify that proper
notifications have been made and that access is maintained
during the entire construction period.
6.3.4 Whenever possible, pre-construction meetings shall be
conducted on each proposed project in order to review this
procedure.
6.3.5 When unforeseen emergency conditions occur that cause a
street closure, the Police Department, Fire Department,
and Valley Communication Center shall be notified by the
appropriate Public Works Division Supervisor, Utility
Official , or their representatives.
6.3.6 Notification shall be made 24 hours before the planned
street closure activities. Advance street warning signage
will be required on partial or full street closures.
