1 .0 PURPOSE:
To establish a policy/procedure for coordinating inspections of
installation of approved water mains, fire hydrants, and fire service
main projects.

4.0 POLICY:
It is City of Renton policy that all installations of water mains, fire
hydrants, and fire service mains be inspected according to standards
adopted by the City.
5.0 DEFINITIONS:
Not applicable.
6.0 PROCEDURE:
6.1 Public Water Mains and Fire Hydrants
6.1 .1 The Public Works Department and/or Water District
Inspectors shall conduct all required installation

inspections and shall witness all tests as specified by
adopted City standards on public water mains and
appurtenances. Private fire protection systems shall be
inspected and tested by the Fire Department and/or Fire
District.
6.1 .2 The Public Works Department and/or Water District shall
notify the Fire Department and/or Fire District of all new
water mains and fire hydrants when accepted and placed in
service.
6.1 .3 Fire hydrants installed and temporarily out of service
shall be identified "out of service" by a method approved
by the Fire Department and/or Fire District.
6.1 .4 Fire hydrants installed and placed in service shall be
verified operational by the Public Works Department and/or
Water District.
6.1 .5 The Fire Department shall check and maintain operational
records for fire hydrants according to departmental
standards.
6.2 Fire Service Mains (Fire Sprinkler/Standpipe Installation)
6.2.1 The Public Works Department and/or Water District shall
conduct all required installation inspections and witness
tests for supply main and associated equipment under the
control of the City of Renton or Water District.
Installations requiring detector check or back-flow
prevention shall be inspected and tested by the Public
Works Department or Water District.
6.2.2 The Fire Department or Fire District shall conduct all
required installation inspections and witness tests in
conjunction with underground pipe from detector check or
back-flow prevention to fire protection equipment.
