' DEC 0 42012 RENTON MAYOR'S SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMITTEE REc�iv�� CITY CLERK'S OFFICE November 19,2012 MEMBERS PRESENT: Ben Cheney, Pat Baylor, Mary B. Brown,Peggy Budziu, Bill � Clapp, Marge Cochran Reep, Dorothy Cook, Eric Eastberg, , Ruby Griffin, Elaine Koehler,Emilie McCue, Sandy Polley, Milt Tiede EXCUSED: M Lou Gilbert, Rose Warren �'Y STAFF: Shawn Da1y, Tim Williams,Debbie Little Ben called the meeting to order at 10:00 A.M., attendance was taken,minutes of previous meeting were read, corrections were noted and minutes were approved. ' Ben reminded members to use the book at the receptionist desk to sign in. This tallies your volunteer time and Pat Baylor does a report based on the number of people who have signed in. Ben wished to thank committee members far serving and acknowledge I the success of past year. He thinks next yeaz will be even better and definitely busier. ' � TREASURER REPORT: Sandy Polley �I Current Balance as of 11/13/12 $15,583.30 RECREATION SUPERVISOR—Shawn Daly • The pool table has been fixed,there was a little nick and the man came back and repaired that. Also,the roof is not leaking. If it isn't leaking after this recent storm it is believed it probably will not leak. • A check was made out to Safeway for$400.00 to help cover the cost of the T'hanksgiving Day Dinner. The committee's portion was $200.00 and Shawn has a check from Loca12170 that will go towards their portion of the cost. • Shawn was alerted last week that two ladies were on the floor upstairs. It always a concern when one person is down but a real concern when it's two people. The ladies were in the chair exercise class and prior to class starting the first lady tripped on a chair leg and fell down. She hurt her knee pretty bad. The second lady tried to assist the first lady and she fell down. It was frightening but fortunately neither lady was seriously hurt. • The By-laws were changed per your recommendation. The recommended change was to the standing committee's of the By-laws. Kathy made those changes last week and the committee members will receive new copies of the By-laws by the first of the yeaz. • � e .� • Thanksgiving Day dinner tickets sold out last week. 275 tickets were given out. Approximately 30 volunteers from the city and another 30 to 40 volunteers from the Rotary Club participated in helping with this dinner. • Rose Warren contacted Shawn and informed him she will be stepping down as a Board member effective the first of the year. A new member will be appointed. Shawn went back to the interview process from last year and , found that Shirley Ha�dock name was at the top of the list. At this point a motion needs to be made by the committee to submit Shirley's name and then letters sent to the Mayor for his approval. Milt made a motion that Shirley Ha�dock be considered and Marge seconded that motion. It was voted on and approved. Ben let the committee know that the Mayor must approve a11 committee members. Ben also asked the committee members not to divulge the consideration of Shirley until it is officially approved by the mayor. RECREATION COORDINATOR—Debbie Little • Starting in January the Banjo Club of Seattle will be using our site as a practice site. They will be practicing the third Tuesda.y of each month from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. From 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. the lunch crowd will be able to enjoy the Banjo Club. If there are people who are not having lunch but would like to listen to the music they aze welcome. 'This is going to be on a 3 month trial basis. They generally chazge for their performances but since this will be practice session there will be no charge. January 15�'will be their first practice session. There was an inquiry about the Banjo Club offering lessons. Shawn said it had been discussed and there will be more information later. • A new water color class is starting today Monday November 19`�. Also today starts the computer class Exce12007 Beyond the Basics. Book Club will meet on Wednesday November 21. They will be reviewing Jeffrey Toobin's book "The Name". Monday November 26�'a class"Distribution Planning for Ira's and Retirement Plans"will be held. Tuesday November 27�' Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisor will be here. Tuesday November 27�'Dan Kellogg will be here to give free legal advice. Writing for Fun class is on Tuesday November 27�'and is being taught by Betty McClain ou.r dance instructor. Also on Tuesday November 27�'we will be going to the Bellevue Botanical Gardens for the enormously popular Garden d'Lights festival. On Thursday November 29�'there will be a trip to the Victorian Country Christmas at the Puyallup Fairgrounds. Introduction to Computers sta.rts a new class on Thursday November 29th. November 30�'will be the Baby Face Luncheon. Participates will bring baby pictures of themselves which will be put up on a poster boazd. People will try and match the picture to the right person. ' � � RECREATION DIRECTOR—Tim William • Clam Light's at Coulon Park begin November 30. Festivities begin at 6:15 p.m. with the Mayor participating by lighting up the lights at 7 p.m. Earl Williams will be performing Celtic music. The Rainier Yacht Club will be doing their float parade. There will be wagon rides for the kids. Also the Christmas ships will be coming down to the Coulon Park azea. Unc�er the shelter azea there will be a bon fire and singing of songs. • Shawn and Debbie will be doing a presentation to the Renton City Council. It will be an overview of what the Renton Senior Center does for our seniors. • Debbie wished a Happy Thanksgiving to a11. ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION: Ben reminded members to make sure they RSVP for the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. Mary Brown passed along compliments that the walkers had about the Senior Center. Sandy inquired regarding resuming trips. This will be addressed after the first of the year. Elaine thanked everyone for the cards she received during her recovery? Milt made a suggestion regarding the centers foot caze program. He wondered if we would benefit by taking a look at how Auburn does theirs. Approximately 10 people per ���use our foot care program. The center receives $2.00 for each person that avails themselves of this service.
