RENTON MAYOR'S SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMITTEE RECENEO

MEMBERS PRESENT: Mary B. Brown, Peggy Budziu, Ben Cheney, Bill Clapp,

Ben Cheney called the meeting to order at 10:00 A.M., attendance was taken; minutes of
the previous meeting were read and approved.
SENIOR SERVICES COORDINATOR'S REPORT: Shawn Daly
• Shawn asked how many of the committee members have ever used the foot I
care service that is provided at the center. The cost for this service is $27.00
and the center receives $2.00 from the cost. The contract for this service has
been renewed for another yeaz. �
• Checks received since last meeting were given to Sandy Polley. These
included a$200.00 check from AARP, a third gift of$100.00 from Lottie
Calhoun, and a$100.00 check from Sheri Brunette in memory of Jack Oden.
• A reminder for those who signed up to volunteer for the Senior Revue. Be at
Carco Theater at 12:00 noon if you signed up for the Thursday performance
and for the Friday night performance please arrive at the theater at 6:00 P.M. '
for the 7:00 P.M. pe�-formance.
• Shawn received the numbers for people taking advantage of the Meals on
Wheels in Renton. 93 clients are using the program and that makes Renton
the largest site in King County. Volunteers come in on Wednesday morning
and pick up meals and deliver direct to client's doorsteps.
• People were at the center to check the windows that need attention. The plan
is the windows in need of replacement will be done in the near future.
� The sign in the front that is in need of replacement will be done at no cost to
the center.
• Important information, a date has been set for the retreat, Monday, June 25�'
from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. It will be held on the 7�'floor of the conference
center at Renton City Ha11. If you require transportation please contact Shawn
or Debbie prior to the retreat. Lunch is included. The last retreat was held in
1997. The retreat is mandatory unless you have a bona-fide excuse for not
attending. The agenda is being established and the second page of the
handout is a questionnaire that needs to be completed by members. Please
have this form filled out and bring it to the May 21 St meeting. Return the
questionnaire to Shawn or Debbie. Terry Higashiyama is facilitating the
event.

Tim is going to check on the specifics of parking at City Hall and will report back
on that information at the next meeting.
DEBBIE LITTLE: Recreational Coordinator •
• A new yoga class begins tomorrow May 8`l'. All levels of fitness axe
welcome.
• Softball practice is over and the real games are being played every Tuesday
and Thursday. Debbie has schedules for the games if anyone would like one.
• Bunka embroidery class is Wednesday May 9th at 9:30 A.M.
• Cooking with Cher is this Wednesday from 1:30-4:30. This week she will be
teaching how to make gyros.
• Computer class Digital Photos is on Thursday May 10�'.
• Thursday afternoon dance will be held Thursday May 10�' from 1:00 P.M.-
3:00 P.M.
• Mother's Day Luncheon is Friday May 11�'.
• Hearing Loss Association of America will meet on Friday May llth from
12:15 P.M.-1:30 P.M.
• Monday May 14th the class Introduction to Email begins.
• Tuesday May 15th a planned hike of the Iron Horse Trail.
• The Book Club will meet Wednesday May 16�' and be reviewing The Devil in
the White City,by author Eric Larson.
• The Million Dollar Quartet will perform Wednesday May 16�' at the Daily
Grill in downtown Seattle.
• Thursday May 17�'begin the computer class, Internet Navigation.
• AARP Renton Chapter will meet Friday May 18�'. Subject of the meeting
will be"Construction of the Rainier Avenue Corridor.
TIM WILLIAMS—Recreation Director
• The Volunteer night was very well attended and very successful. The theme
was sports. Next year there is consideration of a Circus theme.
• A big thank you to the Renton Parks Dept. that gave a face lifts to the
landscaping around the center. Their efforts were in conjunction with
National Arbor Day.
• On the 19�'of May there will be a dance recital at Hazen High School. This
gives pre-school children an opportunity to show their talents.
• On Memorial Day there will be a Veteran's Memorial recognition. The event
will begin at 1 P.M. at Veteran's�Vlark which is in front of the museum.
• The City Council held their retreat to $o aver goals and agenda. They are
looking at areas on how to do a better job.

Shawn brought to the members attention two upcoming events. On June 7'�Gen-Care of
Renton and the Renton Senior Center are proud to host Mr. Roger Anunsen and his
program Keeping Your Mind Sharp. This will be held in the auditorium and begins at
9:30. Pre-registration is�equired. Anticipation is there will be between 150 t�200
�attendees. Also, on June 20�'we will be hosting a Comedy Murder Mystery and Dinner
Show. Tickets are required and are now available. This program is presented by a group
of professionals.

Round Table Discussion:
Marge inquired about the leak on the roof in the auditorium. Tiles may be replaced to
solve this problem. Bill Clapp asked if everyone received an invitation for the Volunteer
Appreciation Dinner and the response was no. Tim apologized for any oversight to those
who did not receive an invitation. Bill said it was a fun filled evening. Mary passed
along how many comments she has heard regarding the bread products that are available
on certain days at the center. A suggestion was made that it might be nice to post a notice
letting members know where the bread.donations.come from. Tim made a suggestion
that it would be nice if a thank-you were to be sent to the Parks Department for the work
done around the center. Pat Baylor will take care of sending a card.
