HomeMy WebLinkAbout11/17/2013 - Minutes ,f�`�' CITY OF RENTON � ��� � ' � G�� OEC 10 2013 RENTON MAYOR'S SElVIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY CONIlVIITTEE RECEIVED November 17,2013 �rcy C�RK'S OFFICE MEMBERS PRESENT: Pat Baylor, Mary Brown, Peggy Budziu, Ben Cheney, Bill Clapp, Marge Cochran Reep, Dorothy Cook, M�j Charbonneau, Eric Eastberg, Ruby Griffm, Shirley Haddock, Elaine Koehler, Sandy Polley, Milt Tiede, Judith Young STAFF: Shawn Daly, Debbie Little, Terry Higashiyama and Kris Stimpson filling in for Tim Williams President Ben Cheney opened the meeting at 10:00 A.M. Ben inqu.ired of the board members if those who have terms ending would wish to continue as board members. Mary Brown expressed concern about continuing but was encouraged by fellow board members that her participation is needed and for her to continue. She yielded to the wishes of the board members. President Ben Cheney informed the board members that effective today November 18,2013 he is terminating his term as president of the Advisory Board. Ben explained that his wife has health issues and his immediate priority is with her... This resignation is to take effect immediately and Ben turned the gavel and meeting over to Vice President Pat Baylor. Before Ben left the meeting he presented bouquets to Secretary Kay Stone and Treasurer Sandy Polley in appreciation of their services Vice President Pat Baylor asked for attendance to be taken. The minutes of the previous meeting were read, corrections were noted and mi.nutes were approved. TREASURER REPORT—Sandy Polley . Bank balance as of 11/18/2013 $18,736.00 RECREATION SUPERVISOR—Shawn Da1y Shawn requested that Ben Cheney attend the December 2°d board meeting and give the board members the opportunity of acknowledging his service as part of the Renton Advisory Board. Ben has consented to being present for that meeting. Shawn advised if there are any members who wish to step down,they are required to do that in writing. Linda Smith with Hope Center of Renton will be attending the board meeting December 2°a to share the function of Hope Center. A check in the amount of$200 from Renton Washi.ngton City Employees Loca12170 was given to Treasurer Sandy Polley. Shawn read a thank you letter from Gen Care Lodge acknowledging Judith Young's volunteer participation in their program. A donation to the Senior Center in the amount of$12,500 has been set up in a Senior Center Fund. T'his donation was given anonymously by a gentleman who appreciates the Senior Center and the service of volunteers at the Senior Center. Funds drawn from this account will be required to have the donor's approval. � � The Thanksgiving Day Dinner at the Senior Center is a sell out. There may be tickets available if there are any cancellations. All volunteer help needs have been met. Good news,just 30 minutes ago the new plate warmer for the kitchen arrived at the center. , cn The Pool Room at the center will be closed November 25, 26 and 27 for installation of new carpet. Also on December 2nd the Pool Room will be closed so the pool tables can be leveled. Today November 18�' Shawn will be hosting a directors meeting here at the Senior Center. 250 new chairs were delivered at the Senior Center right in the middle of classes. Senior Services Thanksgiving Luncheon This is a regular lunch day but a Thanksgiving Dinner Menu with entertainment and prizes. Rotary Club sponsored Thanksgiving Day Celebration This is being held on Thanksgivi.ng Day, it is free but tickets must be reserved by November 20�'. RECREATION DIRECTOR—Terry Higashiyama&Kris Stimpson(Filling in for Tim Williams during his absence.) Terry and Kris passed on addressing their issues until conclusion of regular meeting. At that time they will ask for board members participation and suggestions for items to be considered for the 2014 agenda. ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION Shawn made a suggestion that the board members attend a luncheon at Merrill Gardens. � This would be a great opportunity for board members to share with residents of Merrill � Gardens exactly what is available at the Renton Senior Activity Center. Mary Brown is going to give Shawn a contact person and phone number. December 16�' is the suggested date to go to Merrill Gazdens. Milt Tiede suggested that past board members be asked to attend an occasional board meeting. Shawn responded that that has been made available to past board members and is still available to any that would want to attend a meeting. Peggy Budziu wanted to know if the thank you cards that she sends out could be printed with a generic message instead of Peggy handwriting each one. Shawn suggested he and Peggy look into this possibility. With the conclusion of the regular business part�f the board meeting Terry Higashiyama and Kris Stimpson invited board members to give their suggestions for priority items for the 2014 agenda.
