The project will be built by the City in partnership with the Family First Community Center Foundation directed by Doug Baldwin, the Renton School District and HealthPoint Community Health Centers. The center will be approximately 22,000 square feet. Programs will focus on youth and family education, health and fitness. A large recreation area will provide a gym, fitness and dance spaces with programming provided by the Family First Community Center staff. A dedicated space will be operated by the Renton School District to provide Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) for area youth. HealthPoint will provide medical, dental and counseling services for area residents. The 1‐story building will be constructed and operated to meet established sustainable, efficient standards. The project will include site improvements, including more parking, revised access from 116th Ave SE, and greater landscaping to meet center, school and neighborhood needs. Programs will be coordinated between the center and school district to minimize conflicting activities. Join us at this meeting to learn more about this wonderful project. The intent of this neighborhood meeting is to facilitate an informal discussion between the City of Renton Community Services Department and the neighbors regarding the project. This meeting is in addition to any future public hearing or public comment opportunities available under City of Renton development review processes. Mayor Denis Law, City of Renton The mayor shared his recognition that the neighborhood needs to be served by parks and recreation and didn’t know when it would happen. To achieve th e vision partners have come together to create this facility. Partners include the City, Doug Bald win of the Seahawks and Family First Foundation, the Renton School District, and HealthPoint. The Fa mily First Community Center has come together because of public private partnerships including community donors. Doug Baldwin, Family First Foundation When he lived in the neighborhood, Doug frequently saw kids hanging out around with nowhere to go and it reminded him of what it was like growing up in Florida. This connection made Doug want to help the community thrive. The goal for the Family First Community Center is to act as a community hub with programs and services for the community. T he Center will be a place for everyone – kids, adults, and seniors. Dr. Damien Pattenaude, Superintendent, Renton School District The school district is always asking how they can get things done for the students. They view the Community Center as an extension for learning for t he students of Cascade and the neighborhood at large. Part of this view includes contributing the maker’s space to the project as well as the land. Thomas Trompeter, CEO, HealthPoint HealthPoint provides medical and dental care throughout King County but started in Renton. Health is bigger than meeting with the doctors and dentists. HealthPoint looks at health holistically and works with kids and families. Goal is to support people in being healthy and well in their lives overall. Meredith Everist, President, Baylis Architects The building design is inspired by sustainability a nd wellness and based in biophilic design and connecting to nature. Site design focuses on respecting the neighbors, solving vehicle queuing on 116th during school pick up and drop off times while als o providing adequate parking for the Community Center. The design utilizes organic shapes, natural wood, and access to daylight to reference nature and enhance the focus on health. Russ Woodruff, Capital Project Coordinator - Facilities, City of Renton Construction is expected to begin the first part of 2020 and is expected to take approximately a year. The City is setting up a website to keep the commun ity up to date about the projects progress. There will be 1 or 2 additional community meetings. Questions 1. Will only residents of Renton be able to use the community center? Answer: The Community Center will be open to anyone and there will be no fees. The Community Center operators are aware that people are worried of people coming to use the facility from outside the community. However, the programs will b e geared to the local community. The City is not concerned about the center be overused. 2. Comment – a neighbor is concerned about the traf fic in the neighborhood increasing. Answer: The City has hired a traffic engineer. They want to improve the traffic from Cascade Elementary. The community center (CC) traffic will be separated from the school’s traffic. The goal is to reduce congestion on 116th during school pick up and drop off. 3. Comment – The person things the design is nice and she’s impressed. Will there be a green roof? Answer: Yes, if we can afford it. We’re pursuing sustainability and we have a grant from the state of Washington to be LEED Silver. 4. Will there be more parking spaces? Currently ove rflow parking happens at the church lot (which is ok) but more parking will be helpful. Answer: Yes, there will be more parking. 92 parking spaces are required for the CC. 5. Will there be sidewalks on the West side of 116 th? Answer: The City of Renton is planning improvements for 116th. Kelly Beymer will find out about the timeline. 6. Comment: Excited about the resource being brought to the community. This will be a fantastic addition to the community and neighborhood. 7. Is the only entrance at the front? Is there a se parate entrance for HealthPoint? They are concerned about the parking in the front being accessible and/or available. Answer: There are accessible parking spaces on the South side of the plaza. There will also be a gate that will close off the CC parking from the sc hool parking lot. There is also the possibility tha t some of the parking spaces in the front will be des ignated as HealthPoint parking. 8. How will students at Cascade Elementary be prote cted from CC users? Answer: This is on the mind of the City and CC oper ators and they will address it. The CC will not be open 24/7. Security strategies will be incorpora ted in the new building. The School District will also be adding security cameras at Cascade Elementary. 9. How long will construction take? Answer: 10 – 12 months 10. How will security at the CC entrance be handled ? Answer: There will be a check-in desk right at the entrance. 11. What is the setback at the south property line? Answer: The setback is 15’-0”. 12. Follow up comment about desire for greater security at Cascade Elementary. Answer: In addition to adding security cameras, the school will be getting access control. They aren’t adding metal detectors, but all elementary s chools are getting security cameras. All perimeter doors at Cascade are no locked so you’re only able to enter at the front doors. 13. Comment – There have always been kids hanging a round with nothing to do. Commenter was excited to see the facility get built. 14. How will the building be staffed? Answer: There will be staff at the building. Team is in the process of developing the operations plan. 15. Will the community be notified about construction? Answer: There will be notices about construction. 16. Will there be an EIS? Answer: In the meeting the answer was yes however that was incorrect. There will not be an EIS. There will be a SEPA.
