Human Services Advisory Committee Meeting
October 15, 2019 - 3:00 p.m.
Renton City Hall - Council Conference Room, 7th Floor

1. Call to Order at 3:03 p.m. by Amy Koehl.
2. Approval of Agenda—Joe Scovel moved to approve the October 15, 2019 agenda.The motion was
seconded by Teresa Kenney. All were in favor; motion carried.
3. Approval of Minutes—Teresa Kenney motioned to approve the July 16, 2019 and September 17, 2019
minutes. Motion was seconded by Staci VanderPol.All were in favor; motion carried.
4. Presentation: Dignity for Divas Nikki Gane, Founder and Director
a. History of program
i. Founder's story
ii. More than 65,000 individuals have received assistance and 15,000 care bags distributed

i. Agency strives to keep individuals in stable housing and focus is on self-care
ii. Clients are individuals who have experienced homelessness and are mostly women
iii. Types of services include monthly check-ins,goal planning, referrals, and transportation
iv. Client resource packets focus on financial literacy, health, beauty, and household items

i. Housing burden on King County home owners means many are paying mortgages that are
greater than 50%of annual income
ii. High cost of rental housing means that many are unable to afford even a one bedroom
apartment

Agency Comment:Challenges: This quarter,The Landing bednight numbers were lower than
usual. This is largely due to a high number of young people moving out of homelessness quickly,
and into various housing programs. Many of the people met on Street Outreach in Renton are
not interested in commuting all the way to shelter in Redmond, due to distance and travel time
barriers. This is a challenge in meeting the goal of bednights for the Landing shelter
Staff Comment: Payment has been withheld until any services have been provided. Distance to shelter
may not be feasible for Renton youth. Will revisit with committee after 3rd quarter.

Agency Comment: MSC is meeting or exceeding its YTD service unit goals for all cities with the
exception of the City of Renton. Out of 3 Renton families contacted for follow-up appointments, none
returned MSC staffs phone calls. MSC program management staff discussed other outreach strategies
to engage Renton families such as connecting with the Renton School District's McKinney Vento liaison,
various places of worship and food banks in the Renton area. MSC staff continue to strategize ways to
engage Renton families in the hopes of serving their needs through shelter access. MSC staff is confident
that through our outreach efforts,we will be able to meet the goals for Renton residents to be served
and service units to be provided.
Staff comment: Agency is trying different outreach efforts to serve Renton residents. We will continue
to monitor.

Agency Comment: A number of clinics were canceled first quarter dues to snow,and lack of Dental
staff. They have recruited more dentists and have resumed their regular monthly clinics in all cities.
Staff Comments: the Dental van is always at capacity when it is here. Weather and staffing don't
appear to be issues for the third quarter. .
