Request for Qualifications
The City of Renton,Washington in partnership with the Renton Municipal Arts Commission is soliciting
statements of qualifications from professional artists to be considered for a vibrant mural.The mural
will cover the entire length of a 200-foot concrete wall with a total area of 2500 to 3000 square feet at
the intersection of SE Petrovitsky Road and 116th Avenue SE.The artist will play an instrumental role in
community engagement activities to determine the artistic elements, content, and theme of the mural
design as there is no specific theme for this mural.The engagement activities should build and
strengthen community relationships and unify neighborhood groups under a shared identity within the
Benson Hill community.The artist is encouraged to incorporate the identity, as well as the surrounding
environment and neighborhood into their mural design.
This opportunity is open to all artist with the understanding that the project will require the skills and
experience necessary to create large-scale outdoor public artwork through community involvement.The
artist will work alongside staff within the City of Renton's Recreation and Neighborhoods Division and
AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer Program to organize community engagement activities capable of
facilitation discussion among residents and community stakeholders centered on identifying how the
mural would best represent the Benson Hill community including surrounding neighborhoods.
The selected artist shall develop and provide two conceptual designs of the mural for review the City of
Renton and Renton Municipal Arts Commission. The conceptual design should only be submitted after
the completion of at least two community engagement activities.
The final description of services under this RFQ is subject to negotiations between the selected artist
and the city.The city reserves the right to enter into a future contract with the selected artist to paint
the mural on the wall (see RFQ for contract template).
