May22,2020RentonCityCouncilcityclerk@rentonwa.ovHonorableCityCouncilmembers:IamappealingtotheCityCouncilasElectedOfficialstodotherightthingbyourneighbors,thosewhoarebeingshelteredattheRedLioninRenton,WA.Asacommunity,wearecalledtocareforthevulnerableuntiltheycancareforthemselves.Iamsaddenedthatourresponseasacityistoremoveashelterasopposedtolookingforothersolutionsinwhichtocareforthemarginalizedofourworld.Iknowweusecrimeasthereasonwewantthemoutandtheimpactonthebusinesses.Buthowmanyofthe200+havecommittedacrime?Wewilldealwithcrimeregardless.Crimetakesplacenotonlyinthatlocationbutacrossthecityaswell.DrivethroughtheHighland,Highlandeast,andotherpartsofthecityandyouwillfinddrugexchangesandcrimeofothernature.Igetit!First,Iamconfusedthatiftheywerenotwelcomeinthefirstplace,whyweretheyallowedtocome?IthoughtitwasacompassionatemoveonthecitypartinthetimeofaPandemictoprovidesuchcompassionatesupport.Tohearourcouncil,talkabout“thepeople”andsendthembacktowheretheycomefromislikethePresidenttellingthosefamiliesandchildrenbeingchainedatthebordersandpeoplefromthe“Shole”countries(BlackandBrownpeople)thattheydonotbelonghereisdishearteningtosaytheleast.Thislanddoesnotbelongtoanyoneofusexclusivelybuttoallandsoisthegiftoflife.Wearecalledtobeapeopleofjustice,toensureequityandfairnesstoallandtoespeciallytakecareofthevulnerable.Justasyouaretryingtosavethecitystaffemployees’jobs,thesameeffortsshouldbeputintotakingcareofthosewhoarebeingshelteredinourcommunityforsuchatimeasthis.Whatsolutionsdidthecouncilexplorebesideskickingthemout?Thesearemothers,fathers,sisters,andbrothersandoursiblingswhodesirethesamethingsaswedoandthatisfood,asafeplacetosleepandbelove.Donottellmeyoubelieveinequityandfairnessforallandyetyouractionsarecontrary?Dr.LindaSmithPastor/CommunityActivistforSocialJusticeCc:RAAWhateveraffectsonedirectly,affectsallindirectly.IcanneverbewhatIoughttobeuntilyouarewhatyououghttobe.Thisistheinterrelatedstrnctureofreality...MartinLutherKing,Jr.
