Downtown / South Renton Mural Project
“Market Melody”
Sybil Ania McIntyre – Work by SAM
Concept Description:
Being part of the downtown / South Renton community, one of the things that many
market goers don’t often see is the organized chaos of the weekly set-up of tents and
tables as flowers, fruits and vegetables arrange into beautiful displays for the afternoon.
Challenged with an exceptionally long mural wall, this scene tells the story of this
process through a market melody. Viewers are greeted at the most visible West end of
the alley way with a larger than life saxophone player to capture your attention. The
music from the horn is represented through the history of market posters, fruits,
vegetables, bees, ice cream cones, and flowers drawing your eye down the building as
they arrange into a colorful, detailed market scene on the East end of the building. As
part of the neighborhood grant program, the mural images will include the things that
South Renton residents identified as their favorite things about the market – music,
friendly, diverse people, ice cream, honey (bees), fruits, among other things and will
only include local produce. Permission has been received from the original artist for use
of the market posters to incorporate them into the design. I have reached out to
TrafficWraps and Westcoast Wraps for a quote on vinyl printing and installation so they
will adhere to the wall and withstand the elements over time.
The original design concept incorporated the dumpsters as movable parts of the whole -
fully painted as vegetable stands, ice cream carts, etc. As the project has progressed,
there is concern regarding painting the dumpsters and it is no longer an option.
Significant outreach has also been conducted with the building owners to explore other
options, but we have been unsuccessful in relocating or reducing the number of
receptacles on the wall. The current design includes large whimsical shapes the same
colors as the dumpsters so that they will blend into the wall while the artwork floats
above. The sketches presented in the presentation are rough concepts that will be fully
detailed when I move forward with the design and execution.
