To achieve this objective, the City has zero tolerance for employees possessing firearms and other dangerous weapons in the work environment. An employee's license to carry a weapon does not supersede this policy. 2.0 ORGANIZATIONS AFFECTED: All departments/divisions 3.0 REFERENCES: City of Renton Policy & Procedure 300-47 — Discipline City of Renton Policy & Procedure 340-02 — Unlawful Discrimination, Harassment, & Retaliation City of Renton Policy & Procedure 700-20 — Violence Free Workplace Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 296-800-11005 — Provide a workplace free from recognized hazards 4.0 POLICY: No employee may possess a weapon while conducting City business. No employee may possess a weapon on or in City property. These restrictions extend, but are not limited, to City -sponsored events. These restrictions apply even to employees who are licensed to carry a weapon. These restrictions do not apply to any commissioned officer who is authorized by the employer or any employee required to possess the weapon as a condition of employment. 5.0 DEFINITIONS: 5.1 Weapon(s): Includes but is not limited to the following: all firearms, explosive agents, substances or other hazardous devices, any device from which a 300-02 Weapons Free Workplace p. 2 projectile may be fired by an explosive, slingshots, metal knuckles, spring blade knifes (any knife which opens or is ejected open by an outward, downward thrust or movement), nunchaku (karate sticks) or any other similar martial arts weapon, Shuriken or any other similar throwing star weapons, crossbows, swords, axes, electronic stunning devices, biohazards or similar threatening agents. The foregoing list is not all-inclusive and any additional classification of an item as a prohibited weapon shall be within the authority of the City. 5.1.1 For the purpose of this policy, pepper spray is not considered a weapon if it is carried and used for personal protection. This item shall be stored out of sight. 5.2 Firearm: Includes but is not limited to the following: rifles, shotguns, revolvers, pistols, or other portable guns, BB/pellet guns, firearm replicas, ammunition, components of ammunition including bullets, cartridges, shell casings, primers, igniters, and gun powder. 5.3 City Property: All City -owned or leased real property (including buildings and surrounding areas such as sidewalks, walkways, and driveways) and City -owned or leased property (such as vehicles). Employees are allowed to store weapons in their personal vehicles, if stored securely and out of sight. 5.4 Employee: Includes all regular and supplemental employees of the City of Renton. This includes full-time, part-time, temporary, seasonal, and contract employees. 6.0 PROCEDURES: 6.1 Any employee who observes another employee in possession of a weapon shall immediately report this to a supervisor or the HRRM Department. Any employee who observes his or her supervisor in possession of a weapon shall report directly to the HRRM Department. 6.2 Any employee who observes another employee using a weapon or brandishing in a threatening manner shall immediately call 9-1-1. 6.3 The City reserves the right to refer any violations of this policy to appropriate law enforcement agencies. 6.4 An employee possessing any weapon on City property in violation of this policy will be required to safely remove the weapon from the workplace in a manner approved by the Human Resources and Risk Management Administrator or designee. If there are immediate concerns of safety or security, any employee discovering the existence of the weapon should call 911. Weapons may be 300-02 Weapons Free Workplace p. 3 confiscated by a police officer as such officer deems necessary or appropriate in the course and scope of their duties. 6.5 Any employee in possession of any weapon in violation of this policy will be subject to discipline, up to and including termination. 6.6 It is against City policy for an employee to retaliate against any employee or member of the public who reports or assists an employee to report a possession of a weapon in violation this policy.
