RESPONSE:
Thank you for the opportunity to review and comment. This is in a central part of Duwamish Territory
that the Duwamish Tribe considers culturally significant and has a moderate probability to have unknown
archaeological deposits. If any archaeological work is performed, we request notification. An IDP should
not be used in lieu of an archeological investigation. Cultural and archaeological resources are non-
renewable and are best discovered prior to ground disturbance. Based on the information provided and
our understanding of the project and its APE, we recommend an archeological review performed for this
project and we oppose the fast track motion towards a determination of non-significance.
We realize there is already existing ground disturbance at this site, and that the project is to replace older
tanks, but this is very close to lake Washington and May creek and any fuel tanks in the ground have a
very poor track record. It is understood that this is one of 3 gas stations just at that highway junction, and
also one of many many gas stations around all of Duwamish Territory, but this is a prime example of why
environmental impact reviews cannot be done in isolation from one another locally or even regionally.
Replacing this set of fuel tanks may alleviate leaks in the short term, but will effectively serve to prolong
the pollution of groundwater entering May Creek and Lake Washington.
