Greetings Mr Mayor, Renton City Council Representatives and City Representatives RE: Pending Temporary Ordinance to Renton Municipal Code Title IV zoning affecting the homeless and recommendations for permanent legislation. Your opinion is being sought. You are likely aware of the ordinance addressing de intensification shelters (in particular the Red Lion) that the City of Renton is proposing and its directive that city staff investigate services to the homeless to inform future legislation. Your input is important, please join us. Together with other concerned community members, the Renton Chamber is hosting a pop-up “CommUNITY Conversation” scheduled for this Saturday, December 5th from 12:30p – 2:00pm so we may hear from you. We wish to provide a forum for your voice and listening ear so we may help increase our collective understanding, bridge current gaps in relationship between the City of Renton (municipal government as well as businesses/residents) and King County, and ultimately help to generate long-range solutions for the persistent and increasing problem of homelessness. The ordinance has potential to impact the current De-Intensification Facility located there with contract between DESC /King County and King County/Red Lion, as well as future shelter operations and other issues commonly impacting homelessness. This matter is currently a part of a public hearing (closed except for the allowance of written comment) and set for readings on December 7th and 14th. Hence the rush of this “pop-up” conversation. More information on the ordinance can be found here: https://renton.civicweb.net/FileStorage/C8F39F15D7BE48B082B2C82D3DC0E22C-Adopt%20the%20Following%20Interim%20Zoning%20Controls_%20Cl.pdf https://renton.civicweb.net/FileStorage/374BC0BCECD34C7C97BEC7BF10480BDB-Interim%20Zoning%20presentation.pdf On Saturday, you will have the opportunity to learn, as well as participate: • Elected Leaders will share their perspectives by responding to questions already raised by the community • King County Officials will describe the process of placing homeless individuals • The proposed City Ordinance will be more fully explained • Input from guests will be captured during Breakout sessions facilitated by community leaders with results reported back to larger group • Recommendations will be formulated following the meeting and shared with guests and then sent to City to consider for inclusion in Community Agreements. • Next steps to ensure ongoing mechanisms for input will be discussed LR - 000323 Say, Yes, you will be there, we want to include your voice, hear your ideas. We are community all in this together..
