Greetings Mayor Pavone, City Councilmembers and city staff, This is a follow up to my previous email on 12/2 relating to the CommUNITY Conversation scheduled for tomorrow, December 5th from 12:30pm-2:00pm. This event is being hosted by the Renton Chamber of Commerce and is meant to provide the opportunity for our community to discuss the De-Intensification Facility, as well as the proposed ordinance currently under consideration by the City, which would impact the way homeless services are regulated in our community. We understand this is an issue of incredible importance and that attendance by elected officials at a meeting like this may not be possible due to a number of factors, including the Open Public Meetings Act (OPMA) and ongoing litigation associated with the shelter. Rest assured, should you not be able to join us we will be recording the community conversation and will forward the recording for your review. We hope this conversation, and the ideas that may come out of it, will be a positive addition to the process you’re going through right now. To further clarify, at the event on Saturday, organizers will clearly communicate to attendees that this meeting was scheduled with short notice and the attendance of elected officials is not required, nor is it expected. We appreciate and support the process being conducted by the City, which allows the community to provide feedback to all of City leadership in appropriate public forums. Further clarity will be shared that Councilmembers must abide by the OPMA and the fact that litigation further inhibits elected leaders from participating in a public forum such as this. In addition to these real, legal boundaries, some of you likely have personal or professional commitments that may prevent you from attending this discussion. As I stated previously, we will be recording this meeting and will make the recording available for your review. Should you prefer to join the meeting in real-time, here is the link to participate: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMlfu2orzIjH9E6Wd5sOvLHjX1tMAYANAGP This is a matter that is impactful to our community and the Chamber endeavors to provide a neutral platform for discussion, wherein our members and members of the community feel safe to candidly discuss issues of importance. Finally, the Renton Chamber of Commerce has not taken an official position or issued a statement on the shelter or the proposed legislation. I have and will continue to advocate for a seat at the table for Renton regarding the regional discussion around homelessness. Thank you for the tireless work you’re doing to ensure our community is represented in these discussions. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me directly. Thank you for your continued service on behalf of the communities we live and work in. You are appreciated.
