Subject: Complaint Letter - Red Lion
CAUTION: This email originated from outside the City of Renton. Do not click links, reply or open attachments unless
you know the content is safe.
This is email is a complaint regarding the homeless shelter at the Red Lion in Renton. Ever since the
pandemic and the changeover at the Red Lion to be a homeless shelter our city has gone downhill.
Almost every place you drive around in Renton you see transients begging for money, doing drugs right
in front of you, peering into closed businesses, garbage is piled up in front of business in downtown
Renton and on the walking trails. I don’t feel safe walking by myself in my own city which is
unacceptable. I won’t go to Safeway on Third Street because of the abuse from people hanging
outside. I have seen theft in both the Safeway and Fred Meyers but the employees won’t do anything
because they don’t feel safe to handle these type of situations.
The Red Lion might have been a good idea but has not been run properly and has created an
environment that attracts dangerous people and dangerous behavior. When business owners talk to
the police they are told there is nothing they can do and are just as frustrated. We are told that for the
most part the people are harmless. Again, this type of response is unacceptable. I shouldn’t have to
ask a person to stop shooting up drugs in order for me to go into a coffee shop. The library has become
an unsafe area to bring children to prior to be closed down from Covid. The homeless people actually
are chasing people in the parking lot. I live in the Rolling Hills area and can't walk my dog in our trails
any longer because this has become a place for homeless people to camp and discard their garbage
and needles. Again, this is unacceptable.
Why is okay to allow people to camp under the highway on Grady Way? There are now at least six
shopping carts filled with garbage and people staying there even though it is clearly marked that
trespassing is not allowed.

Renton is turning into a mini Seattle with the way we are handling the homelessness. You can’t allow
people to stay in the shelter without rules and services without any repercussions. The Red Lion does
not seem like a safe space any longer for both the residents due to their lack of care and it’s not safe to
the residents of Renton.
Thank you,
Misty Jackson
