Hi Angelea,
Apologies for the lack of detail on the privacy screen. The scale to show the whole length of
fence didnt afford a good view of that.
Additionally, I don't have an exact product specd yet for the lattice. Ideally it would be a tight
lattice with minimal visibility through it as that is what will be blocking the view from people
up on the play structure.
I have also seen some nice metal panel options with small slot openings that might work as
well. (E.g. https://www.wayfair.com/Matrix-Decor-Screens--70.8-In.-X-17.7-In.-Fern-

Whichever way we go, the more privacy I can have with the upper screen the better.
If I need to spec the exact product and provide a more detailed elevation, please let me know
and I would be happy to do so.
Thanks!
Ben

Hello Ben,
I did not see that 2nd page. Thank you for the clarification. Is it possible for you to provide a
photo example of the fence? Is the picture below a good example? The lattice in the rendering
appears to be nearly completely opaque with pin dot openings. I’m not sure if that is what is
intended. How large in inches are the lattice openings?
Thank you,

Hi Angelea,
The elevation is on the 2nd page of the Plan Drawings
(P_SPECIAL_FENCE_PERMIT_RADIN_160821_V1.PDF). I only showed the elevation of
the section that I'm requesting the height extension for, but I would be happy to provide
additional elevations as needed.
The highlighted area could be at either height, I think aesthetically it would look good to match
height with the top of the rest of the fence run, though the gate itself would only be 6'
tall. With that being said, I would be happy to reduce the height of that section to 6' if that is
preferable.
Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thank you for your consideration.

Hello Ben,
This special fence permit has been assigned to me for review. The only necessary item that is
missing is the elevations as indicated in the attached handout. An example of elevations is
included. I also had one question for clarification. Will the highlighted area below also be 10
feet?
Once I get that additional information, I will send you an invoice for payment before I begin
processing.
Have a great day!

Hello, Ben –
A fence that “straddles” a property line would not be entirely on your property and would
therefore require consent from the adjoining property owner. Most homeowners build fences
entirely on their property in order to have complete control of the structure and make future
maintenance, repairs, or replacement a non-issue with current or future neighbors.
Regarding your inquiry about exceeding fence height limits, please see the attachment to
review our special fence permit process and standards. The current fee for this permit is $160
plus a 5% technology surcharge.
Please email with any other questions.

Thank you for the prompt response, I reviewed the handout and your answers and still had 2
questions:
-Can a fence be built that straddles the property line (i.e. the property line goes through the
middle of the fence) or does it need to be completely on my side of the line, and if so, does
that include the footings or just the stuff above ground?
-Is there any possibility of an exception to the 5' setback for a fence taller than 72", given
that it is next to a public park and would not have any bearing on safety sightlines for the

road? My house is only about 8' from the property line on the park side, so the setback
would put the fence in the middle of the small path alongside the house, and as I mentioned
previously, a 6' fence provides little privacy due to the park being 3 or 4' higher in elevation
than that side of my lot.

Ben

Subject: Questions about Fences
Hello Renton Permit and Planning Departments,
First of all I apologize if I have not emailed the correct departments. I have thoroughly
reviewed RMC 4-4-040 and despite that I have a couple of questions about building a
residential fence.
1) I did not see any reference to how close a fence may be built to a property line, or if it
can be built right on the property line. Is there a limitation on this, and if so, does it apply
to the face of the fence, the edges of the posts, the edges of the footings, etc? There are no
setback requirements for fences up to 72” along any side or rear property line or for any
fence up to 48” in height located along a front or secondary front property line. An 8’
landscaped setback is required for a fence with a height up to 72” along any secondary
front yard.
CAUTION: This email originated from outside the City of Renton. Do not click links, reply or open
attachments unless you know the content is safe.
2) Does construction of a residential side and rear yard fence not abutting a street or alley
require a permit? No a permit is not required for a fence up to 72” along a side or rear
property line.
3) What is the correct process for requesting an administrative review in order to build a
fence taller than 72"? My property abuts a public park and a 6' fence would not provide
much privacy due to the park being at a slightly higher elevation and there being a play
structure on the side nearest my property. A fence exceeding 72” would be required to
comply with the appropriate side or rear yard setbacks for residential structures applicable
to your zoning designation (i.e. in an R-8 zone the portion of the fence above 72” would
need to be setback 20 feet from the rear property line and 5 feet from a side property line)
and would also require a Special Fence Permit, an application for a special fence permit is
available here.
Thank you very much for your assistance with these questions.
Sincerely,
Ben
