ORDINANCE NO. 5833
AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON, AMENDING
SUBSECTION 4-2-110.D, OF CHAPTER 2, ZONING DISTRICTS — USES AND
STANDARDS, OF TITLE IV (DEVELOPMENT REGULATIONS) OF THE RENTON
MUNICIPAL CODE, CREATING ADDITIONAL ALLOWED PROJECTIONS INTO
SETBACKS.
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON, DOES ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION I. Subsection 4-2-110.D.4, Allowed Projections into Setbacks, of Chapter 2,
Zoning Districts, of Title IV (Development Regulations) of the Renton Municipal Code, is hereby
amended as follows:
4. Allowed Projections into Setbacks:
a. Fireplace Structures,Windows: Fireplace structures, bay or garden
windows, enclosed stair landings, and similar structures as determined by the
Zoning Administrator may project twenty_four inches (24") into any setback;
provided, such projections are:
i. Limited to two (2) per facade.
ii. Not wider than ten feet (10').
b. Fences, Rockeries,and Retaining Walls: See RMC 4-4-040, Fences,
Hedges, and Retaining Walls.
c. Steps and Decks: Uncovered steps and decks not exceeding
eighteen inches (18") above the finished grade may project to any property line.
Uncovered steps and decks having no roof covering and not exceeding forty_two
inches (42") high may be built within the front yard setback.

d. Eaves: Eaves and cornices may project up to twenty_four inches
(24") into any required setback.
e. Porches and Stoops: May project into front setbacks up to eight
feet (8') and into side setbacks along a street up to five feet (5').
f. Overhead Weather Protection: Roofs and awnin�s situated above
pedestrian entrvwavs mav extend up to five feet (5'1 into a required setback and
mav extend no wider than three feet (3') on either side of the entrvwav.
g. Accessibilitv Ramps: Ramps required for barrier free access, and
meetin�all Building Code requirements includin�slope and handrails, mav intrude
into required setbacks. This exemption will be limited to the extent necessarv to
meet the Buildin�Code requirements.
h. Cisterns and Rain Barrels: Rain barrels, cisterns, and other
rainwater catchment svstems mav intrude into a reauired setback as follows:
i. Elements are not permitted in the front setback.
ii. Elements which are less than fiftv-four inches (54") above
finished �rade and contain up to six hundred (600) �allons mav intrude into a side
or rear setback a distance no �reater than twentv percent (20%) of that setback,
but must maintain at least three feet (3') of undisturbed setback.
iii. Elements which are �reater than fiftv-four inches (54") above
finished �rade or contain over six hundred (600) �allons shall not intrude upon
side and rear setback requirements.

i. Arbor. Per�ola or Trellis: Allowed in reauired vard setbacks if thev
meet the followin� provisions:
i. The len�th of anv side shall not exceed twelve feet (12') and the
footprint shall not exceed ei�htv (80) square feet inclusive of eaves•
ii. A maximum hei�ht from finished �rade to the top of the
structure of ten feet (10');
iii. Both sides and roof shalt be at least fiftv percent (50%) open or
if latticework is used, there shall be a minimum openin� of two inches (2")
between crosspieces.
iv. Limited to two (2) such structures per lot.
j. Heatin�, Ventilation, and Air Conditionin� (HVAC) Svstems: HVAC
Systems mav extend into anv side or rear vard setback.
SECTION 11. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect five (5) days after publication
of a summary of this ordinance in the City's official newspaper. The summary shall consist of this
ordinance's title.
