In the kitchen's case, that need is money. If you're tuning in for the first time, the Friendly Kitchen is a once-a-week program that offers free meals each Thursday to residents in need. It's been averaging about 125 persons a week since the Renton Ecumenical Association of Churches began the service last April. Because a meal is provided at the site, donations of mixed canned goods aren't as appropriate as outright cash with which to purchase food. At that, thanks to volunteers who do the shopping and cooking, those meals come in for the bargain-basement cost of from $40 to$100 for the 125 or so who come to dine. The kitchen's cupboard is running so close to the last bone that sponsors fear the facility will have to shut down. Donations have dropped off since things started three months ago. Says kitchen co-chairman Bob Adamonis "It's kind of interesting how the human spirit works; once the excitement wears off, people tend to forget you're there." Yes, the Friendly Kitchen is still there, but it needs your help. Donations may be mailed through Donna Moors, c/o Skyway United Methodist Church, 11800 Renton Ave. S., Seattle 98178. Q. Delores A. Mead, C. C. City Clerk OPINION Family Kitchen response to need Nearly 2,000 Renton men and women are out of work today. That's 13 percent of the work force among residents. But those are just numbers. A closer look reveals the husband and father who was laid off from work eight months ago, the senior citizen who is trying to get by on Social Security checks, the divorced mother of three trying to feed her kids. A number of Renton residents have looked closer than the numbers. They saw the father, the senior citizen, the mother, the kids. And The Friendly Kitchen was born. The Friendly Kitchen is sponsored by the Renton Ecumen- ical Association of Churches. It is offered each Thursday starting at 5:30 p.m. to all who are hungry—no questions asked. The first dinner offered by The Friendly Kitchen occurred last Thursday. Sponsors didn't know whether two or 200 persons would show up. About 100 men, women and children of all ages showed up. Their response, understandably, was enthusiastic. "It's great that they have something like this in Renton," said one mother. "When it gets to the end of the month, it's kind of hard," said another woman who is out of work. What we particularly like about the concept of The Friendly Kitchen is that dinner starts at 5:30 p.m. That means everyone comes in at the same time, dishes up their plate at the same time, and sits down to eat at the same time. In other words, it really is a family dinner; an extended family, perhaps, but a family nevertheless. Community togetherness, that old-time "family feeling," is what it's all about, isn't it? Idea researched REACH members, Mrs. Berney said, investigated the need for such a program in Renton and researched similar prog- rams in other communities before decid- ing to proceed with The Friendly Kitch- en. She said the Salvation Army in Renton, which operates the food bank, encouraged the churches to begin the feeding program. Officials of the state Department of Social and Health Ser- vices, she said, also perceived the need for the program. Nearly 2,000 Renton residents, 13 per- cent of the workforce, were out of jobs in February. In addition to the unemployed, an unknown number of people in the Renton area have been affected by reductions in government social service programs. Bob Bowman, head of the Kent office of DSHS,noted that the number of people receiving help through programs such as aid to families with dependent children and medical assistance is down from a year ago, despite the downturn in the economy. Regulations have been tight- ened for those programs, making it harder for people to receive assistance_ Grants down In the Kent and Renton areas,Bowman said, 1,968 people were receiving grants for aid to dependent children in April of 1981. This year, the number has de- creased by 115 to 1,873. Medical assist- ance grants are similarly down from 1,037 to 967. But while those programs have de- creased in enrollment, the food stamp program has seen a heavy increase. Bowman, who said the food stamp enroll- ment was a good indication of the state of the ecomony, said 679 more people were getting food stamps in January of this year than a year ago.The number jumped from 2,932 to 3,611.Regulations have not been altered as much for food stamps as for the nthPr nrnarnmv 7 n _—c --- — - — — — quailly u nuwman said, making that program a good indication of the in- creased need for help.
