Other comments may be offered if the project progresses. This project is proposed in a location which is part of a sockeye salmon beach spawning index area. An indec area is a habitat which is surveyed consistently because it is part of the core habitat used by a salmon stock. This location is also a shoreline on which sockeye, coho, and chinook salmon rear during their spring migrations from the lake. You may be aware that Puget Sound chinook salmon are proposed to be listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. WDFW is likely to deny the Hydraulic Project Approval for the proposed dock due to its impacts on the habitat on which the above salmon species depend for survival. Dock construction has direct impactsi on beach spawning sockeye salmon habitat and also impacts habitat in other ways that are less obvious. Docks provide excellent habitat for smallmouth bass, a known predator on juvenile salmonids. Dock pilings also deter shoreline currents, causing increased deposition of fme sediments. Shorelines with fme sediments are the preferred sites for Eurasian water milfoil, the spread of which further degrades habitat and disrupts shoreline currents. A site review Iby WDFW showed that the site was already equipped with facilities for boat moorage, including a boatlift and moorage buoy. Moorage buoys are less impacting and should be the selected alternative, rather than docks,to mitigate unnecessary impacts to fish life.
