May 31, 1957 The Honorable City Council City Hall Cedar River Park Renton, Washington Re: Petition for vacation of portion of South 126th Street between 91st Avenue South and Rainier Avenue, Gentlemen THE FOLLOWING CITIZENS, taxpayers and homeowners of the City, of Renton, residing on South 126th Street and in the vicinity of the proposed street vacation, do hereby object to the street vacation proposed in thepetition as referred to, and as reasons for their objection submit the following: The street in question, while naw only a designation on the plat, can and could be made into a passable and usable street; in a time to come, it could be developed into a street, though requiring engineering and work, in the same manner as other streets are developed as situations arise which make their development feasible and necessary, We people living on South 126th Street immediately west of the proposed vacation, are presently on a dead end street having access to Rainier Avenue only by a round about route, Although it is no minor job, it is entirely financially feasible to continue said 126th street through, giving ready access to those persons in the vicinity to Rainier Avenue. It is submitted that the cutting through of said street would facilitate the more rapid servicing of the area by Renton police and fire departments in the event of emergency. We feel that this street belongs to us as area property owners, in company with all other citizens and taxpayers of Renton; and that it should not be eliminated simply for individual profit, where no public advantage, benefit or improvement can be shown;; and where there always remains the possibility that its utiliption may be desired or required, Objectors further cite that the said street area could be W • used as a parking lot for oars of residents of the adjacent hill sections, who are unable to get up the hill roads when snowy and icy conditions exist, such as was the case during the winter of 1956-1957, and were forced to abandon their cars at points along Rainier Avenue. Objectors further assert that they donnot believe in the equity of a transaction wherein the city gives away valuable business zones property belonging to all the taxpayers of the city to any individual or group for his or their exclusive profits Once given away, this valuable property is forever lost to public use; whereas, if retained by the city it will remain in the ownership of all the people of the city, for whatever use may develop in the near future or in the years to comg- We pray your honorable body to keep and retain the aforesaid described valuable property fronting on Rainier Avenue, for the uses profit and enjoyment of all the people of Renton, as well as for the probable or possible utilization of the homeowners and taxpayers in the affected - J /1,,e f i ` / v , 4 RESIDING AT it7/0 -- /' % ?ZI pp € cam--.. 277 , RESIDING AT ® f /6 "v / .)---6-.-.2 - RES IDING AT i In , /, -t e. , RESIDING AT % ?t 4- S, 124 e-, g , , RESIDING AT er-y6t SA,/.24`& .fi`.pile:l , r .,f/L a,..— Oyrot 7,..r. v::r', .,,. The majority of this plat was vacated by King County and replatted as Woody Glen Addition. Their engineers and planners welcomed the vacation of S. 123rd, S. 124th, and south 126th within the Woody Glen Plat since the grades involved were so impossible. We believe you will, upon inspection of the terrain, agree - a street in this location is unfeasible. Its vacation will permit the leveling of Rainier Ave. frontage to the south of said street, permit its development to the highest and best use, and put otherwise useless property on the tax rolls.
