Limitations: The presence of our field representative at the site is to provide our client with a source of professional advice, opinions, and recommendations based upon the field representative’s observations and testing of the contractor’s work. Our services do not include supervision or direction of the contractor, their employees, or agents. Geotechnical recommendations for obtaining project objectives may be made by our representatives; however, direction of the actual work should come from the owner or contractor, as appropriate. The contractor is responsible for complying with the contract documents at all times, regardless of the presence of our field representative. Jobsite safety, including compliance with all applicable state or federal regulations, is the sole responsibility of the contractor. The observations, recommendations, and conclusions provided in this field report are preliminary until reviewed by the ESNW project manager.
Per client request, ESNW rep arrived onsite at the Weatherly Inn development to observe and document wall subgrade excavation and slope conditions. While onsite the following was observed: Cast-In-Place Wall Excavation Observations: Upon arrival ESNW rep observed that the contractor was onsite and continuing wall excavation. During the morning, ESNW rep observed that the contractor had excavated to the planned wall subgrade elevation and was beginning to slope back the excavation faces to near vertical conditions. ESNW rep observed that the over-steepened wall excavation cut faces consisted of very dense brown weathered SP-SM glacial tills within the upper 4-6’ of the face, grading to very dense cemented grey SP-SM glacial tills within the lower elevations of the excavation slope face.
Upon return onsite during the afternoon, ESNW rep observed the contractor was continuing to excavated westward, exporting soil then progressively continuing to slope back the wall excavation slopes to a near
vertical condition, with current near vertical heights of approximately 6-9’ dependent on location. ESNW rep observed the contractor had stockpiled anchored plastic sheeting and was informed that all excavation cut faces would be covered at the end of day.
The slopes of the excavation were observed to be stable and unchanging in its current temporary configuration, however it is the responsibility of the contractor to perform all necessary safety
measures in accordance with state and federal regulations. It is recommended that the contractor inform ESNW if any changes in the slope conditions occur. Please refer to the attached plan detail and photo documentation provided below. ESNW rep will return per request of the client.
