Limitations: The presence of our field representative at the site is to provide our client with a source of professional advice, opinions, and recommendations based upon the field representative’s observations and testing of the contractor’s work. Our services do not include supervision or direction of the contractor, their employees, or agents. Geotechnical recommendations for obtaining project objectives may be made by our representatives; however, direction of the actual work should come from the owner or contractor, as appropriate. The contractor is responsible for complying with the contract documents at all times, regardless of the presence of our field representative. Jobsite safety, including compliance with all applicable state or federal regulations, is the sole responsibility of the contractor. The observations, recommendations, and conclusions provided in this field report are preliminary until reviewed by the ESNW project manager.
Per client request, ESNW rep arrived onsite at the Weatherly Inn development to observe and document wall subgrade excavation and slope conditions. While onsite the following was observed: Cast-In-Place Wall Excavation Observations: ESNW rep arrived onsite per request to continue observation and documentation of ongoing cast in place wall excavation and subgrade conditions within the central areas of the Weatherly Inn development. Upon arrival, ESNW rep observed the contractor was offsite however had placed additional anchored plastic sheeting along the wall subgrade and covered all onsite slopes. Wall Excavation Slope Stability Observations: At this time, the slopes of the excavation were observed to consist of near vertical slope faces of approximately 14’ in height at the greatest extent within the eastern areas of the excavation, falling in height and gradually changing to approximate 4-7’ near vertical faces with an approximate 1H:1V slope above the vertical portion where space allows. ESNW rep observed a localized area of sloughing along the upper excavation face, and observed that a localized area of utility bedding material from where the ductile iron water utilizes intersects the wall face. ESNW rep observed that this area was below and existing section of scaffolding, and had undermined a scaffolding post. The contractor was observed to have temporarily shored the scaffolding with onsite sections of wood, however it is recommended that the contractor not allow traffic along the scaffolding for safety reasons. The onsite superintendent (Joe) informed ESNW rep that this slough had occurred during the weekend, and was present upon arrival on Monday (2/28) morning. The contractor agreed to contact ESNW rep if any further slope changes occur, and will remove the localized area of sloughed material.
The remainder of the slopes of the excavation were observed to be stable and unchanging in its current temporary configuration, however it is the responsibility of the contractor to perform all necessary safety measures in accordance
with state and federal regulations. It is recommended that the contractor inform ESNW if any changes in the slope conditions occur. Please refer to the attached plan detail and photo documentation provided below. ESNW rep will return per request of the client.
