GeotechnicalEngineegRep6r.DecerchioBulkheadFailureApril14,2015RMIFileNo.69415Page2SITECONDITIONSSurfaceThesiteconsistsofanapproximately4-foottallrockbulkheadalongthewestandsouthsidesofaresidencelocatedat4005WilliamsAvenueNorth.ThesiteisboundedonthewestbyLakeWashingtonandonthesouthbythemouthofMayCreek.WilliamsAvenueiseastoftheresidenceandanotherresidenceissituatednorthofthesite.Therockbulkheadisfoundedonbeachdeposits,recentalluviumorartificialfill.Thesoilsurfacedeclinesunderwatergentlytothewestofthebulkhead.Wealsonotedafailureaboutthemiddleofthewestbulkheadandseveralareaswherethebulkheadhadlostfillandsmallrockalongthebulkhead.Wealsonotedthatthefaceofthebulkheadlackssufficientbatterandtherewasnoapparentdrainagerockbehindthebulkhead.GeologyMostofthePugetSoundregionwasaffectedbypastcontinentalglaciations.Thelastperiodofglaciation,theVashonStade,endedapproximately10,000to11,000yearsago.Manyofthegeomorphicfeaturesseentodayarearesultofscouringandoverridingbyglacialice.DuringtheVashonStade,thePugetSoundregionwasoverriddenbyover3,000feetofice.Soillayersoverriddenbytheicesheetwerecompactedtoamuchgreaterextentthanthosethatwerenot.Atypicalglacialsequenceincludesglacialtilloverlyingadvanceoutwash,underlainbytransitionaldepositsandoldernon-glacialandglacialsediments.WereviewedtheGeologicMapofKingCounty,Washington,byBooth,D.B.,Haugerud,R.A.,andSacket,J.(inpressonline,forthesitegeology.ThesiteareahasyoungeralluviummappedalongthewestsideofthemouthofMayCreekwithpossibleartificialfillmappedunderthesite.Wealsounderstandthesitemayhavebeenconstructedonfillplacedovercontaminatedsoil.RMIASSOCIATESLLC
