HomeMy WebLinkAbout08/02/2016 - Minutes RENTON MUNICIPAL ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES August 2, 2016 Renton City Hall, 7th Floor –Conference Center Members Present: Marsha Rollinger, Mary Clymer, Ben Andrews, , Bill Huls , Samantha Goetz-Granquist , Paul Hebron, Kimberly Eshelman , Mitch Shepherd, and Aaron Blalack Excused Absence: Adrienne La Faye, Neil Sheesley, Jerri Everett and Evelyn Reingold Staff Present: Chip Vincent, Administrator - City of Renton Department Community & Economic Development; Bernita Horn, Diversity and Inclusion Consultant to the City of Renton; and Angie Mathias, City of Renton Planning Department Call to Order: Meeting was called to order by RMAC - Chair, Marsha Rollinger at 6:00 pm. Approval of Minutes: Minutes of the July 5, 2016 RMAC meeting were read and accepted. Old Business: Pop-up Downtown September 16, 2016: Marsha and Mitch discussed a Parklet design that will feature a Botanical (plant or flower focused) art gallery in a park like setting with benches and tables. The RMAC Parklet will be located in front of the new Urban Sprouts business. More local artist images are needed for this outdoor gallery. Marsha has purchased materials and will build park tables and benches. Mary is making yarn flowers for the RMAC gallery display. All RMAC members are invited to help with set up and to host the Parklet at 724 S 3rd St. (Cortona Building- Old City Hall/First NW Woolworth store) this historic building is on the National Trust registry. RMAC members were also asked to help host the Owl Project activities inside the Cortona Building. New Business: Galvanizing Art Projects Aug-Dec 2016 1. *RenCon - The Renton City Comic Convention is a unique celebration of everything people love about comic books, films, art, video games, technology, and more. The event is a celebration for comic book geeks, technophiles, cosplayers, and nerds of all ages! Panels, guest speakers, vendors, artists and activities for families will be featured from October 28 – 30th at the Renton Red Lion. MSC (Mitch/Bill) The RMAC will support the RenCon event with a sponsorship amount of $500. Marsha noted that our RMAC logo is to be included on all publicity related materials and a (hi-res) image will be sent to Ben after this meeting. *2nd and Main Street Art Project – Meetings were held with Benson Shaw (Going Global) and his artistic vision did not mesh with the RMAC. His proposals are not under further consideration. Other Business: A lengthy discussion ensued regarding funding basics and the issue that not all RMAC members understand the process for the allocation of funds. Ben, Aaron and Bill will meet to review our RMAC process, grant applications, and other budget requests and bring recommendations to the September meeting. Correspondence and announcements: The correspondence and event folders were circulated for individual review. Please note the following events:  Seattle Art Fair; Aug. 4-7  Music @ Renton Chamber of Commerce Fridays 5-7. Happy Hour and Sustainable Renton Saturday 11-4  Mary Clymer Art @ Georgetown Art Attack, Saturday 08/13, from 6-9. She curated the art show. Location: 8 & Sand Gallery  Closing Weekend for the Summer Teen Musical. Suessical the Musical  August 27th Renton Clean-up from 10-12 (which I went to, also!) The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 pm.
