HomeMy WebLinkAbout11/01/2016 - Minutes RENTON MUNICIPAL ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES November 1, 2016 Renton City Hall, 7th Floor –Conference Center Members Present: Marsha Rollinger, Mary Clymer, Mitch Shepherd, Jerri Everett, Paul Hebron, Neil Sheesley, Samantha Goetz-Granquist, Aaron Blalack, and Evelyn Reingold Excused Absence: Adrienne La Faye, Bill Huls, and Ben Andrews Staff Present: Elizabeth Higgins, RMAC Staff Liaison; Chip Vincent, Administrator - City of Renton Department Community & Economic Development; and John Collum, Department of Community and Economic Development Call to Order: Meeting was called to order by RMAC - Chair, Marsha Rollinger at 6:00 pm. Approval of Minutes: Minutes of the August 2, 2016 were read and accepted. MSC (Mitch/Paul) Minutes of the October 4, 2016 were read and accepted. MSC (Mitch/Aaron) A revision to the September 6, 2016 minutes was made to include the amount of $1500 for the Band Concert project. MSC (Mitch/Mary) Correspondence and Announcements: *Kim Eshelman – Letter of resignation was received. Acknowledgement of resignation and appreciation for her service to RMAC will be sent by Elizabeth and Marsha. *December 1, 2016 Local Arts Agency Meeting – This meeting will be at the new Vashon Island Art Center. The meeting is from 9:30 -12:30. RMAC members will meet in Renton City Hall lobby at 7:30 a.m. to take a city van to Vashon. The amount of $100 to cover the vehicle and passenger ferry costs has been committed from our general fund budget. *Renton River Days Art Market Position – This position to coordinate and vet artists for the Art Market venue has a small stipend. An Intern is available for support. *REACH Lunch Meeting, Tuesday, 12/06/2016 – The Renton Ecumenical Association of Churches will meet at Luther’s Table. Marsha, Mary, Mitch and Samantha plan to attend. *Other - Correspondence and event folders were circulated for individual review. Committee Reports:  Dragon Committee – Paul reported that the dragon sculpture is located in the Arts Unlimited Griot Arts Center window at the Cortona Building. Ben proposed using some of the yearend balance from RMAC Sustained Support funds to pay for materials ($3550) incurred by the artist. The dragon is for sale at $12,000. Ben, Bill and Mitch are to review available options the dragon as a City of Renton Public Art and report their recommendations to the RMAC. Everyone is invited to check out the dragon in the window.  Holiday Storefront Design Competition –The Downtown Partnership is facilitating this project to have art in empty downtown storefronts. A Call to Artists for installation of flat art has been issued (due 11/26/16). Also, the Santa House has been moved from the Piazza into the Cortona Building.  Renton School District - On October 31, 2016, Elizabeth, Mitch and Evelyn met with Kristina Bellamy- Mc Clain, Director of Instruction for the Renton School District. This was a very positive meeting. We discussed opportunities to develop future joint efforts between the RMAC and the Renton School District. The dialogue will continue after the new year. Galvanizing Art and Other Project Updates: *2nd and Main Project – The City Council Planning and Development Committee has approved the design concept. The RMAC is moving forward with Studio OHM and the City of Renton’s 1% for Art design process. The design is intended to engage the public with dynamic lighting and apps for on- site involvement. Mary and Mitch and the Studio OHM artists will work closely with affected Renton City departments to minimize potential design issues. * Band Concert - The “Lost Dogma Band” concert on Saturday, November 12, 2016 at the Renton Civic Theater was cancelled. *Townhall Meeting – Neil reported that the meeting was well attended. Another Townhall event will be held in February and the City Attorney will be invited to attend. *South Renton Connection – Mayor Law has released the Eastside Interceptor Mitigation Fund for transfer to South Renton neighborhood. The funds will be used in 2017 for a significant piece of Public Art to acknowledge the contributions of this historic neighborhood. The Art-Cultural Project Committee, Elizabeth and interested RMAC members, will be exploring appropriate locations in the South Renton neighborhood. Budget Update: *2016 Budget – The current budget status was presented and accepted. *4Culture Grant Application – The 2017-2018 grant application was submitted by the October 19th due date.
