Subject: Support for a humane pet store ordinance
Dear Ms. Marshall and honorable members of the Renton Planning Commission,
On behalf of the Humane Society of the United States and our Renton supporters, I urge you to make a
favorable recommendation to Renton City Council concerning the passage of a humane pet store
ordinance.
Renton should join nearly 400 localities across 28 states, including 9 in Washington (Bainbridge Island,
Bremerton, Poulsbo, Gig Harbor, Kitsap County, Port Orchard, Olympia, Tumwater, Lacey), and 5 states,
that have enacted laws prohibiting the sale of dogs and cats in pet stores.
With adoption of a humane pet store ordinance, Renton can cut off the puppy mill-to-pet store pipeline,
protect consumers, and promote humane pet stores that profit from selling in-demand pet products and
services rather than puppy mill puppies.
For more information, please see the attached fact sheets on the benefits of a humane pet store
ordinance, pet store industry trends, and the deficiencies of the USDA as it relates to oversight of the
commercial breeding industry.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions.
Sincerely,
Amy Jesse
