Subject:Banning the retail sale of puppies
Dear Planning Commissioners, Managers, and Directors,
I was out of town and missed the opportunity to speak on this subject so would like to add a few comments as you make
a decision on the exception to the new ban on retail sales of puppies. I understand Puppyland has managed to add
wording that could allow them to continue to sell puppies. Having just rescued a puppy from a breeder who became ill,
leaving six adult dogs, one of them pregnant, and a litter of four pups to fend for themselves, this is near to my heart. I
believe she would have fallen under the umbrella of a "hobby breeder." One of the pups did not survive the ordeal.
For those of us who grew up getting our dogs as "walk-ons" when dogs bred and roamed at will, I am pleased we have
come such a long way in protecting animals. People rarely see a stray dog any longer. Unfortunately, the development
of the designer dogs in recent years has created a market for continuous breeding of the bitches for nothing more than
sheer profit, and this profit is significant which only can encourage more irresponsible and cruel breeding tactics
Hopefully, we can all see the need for strict restrictions and regulations of this industry to protect those who cannot
protect themselves.
Thank you for your consideration of my perspective.
