Subject:I Urge the City of Renton to Consider a Humane Pet Sales Ordinance
Dear Ms. Marshall:
I wasn’t able to get this email to you before the meeting two days ago but was told we had until Aug.
25th to comment on this issue. Can you please forward this letter to the entire Planning Commission
in regards to D-194: Retail Pet Sales? Thanks!
I urge the Commission to vote in support of a humane ordinance to prevent pet stores from partnering
with commercial breeders that sell puppies. This ordinance would stop the puppy mill-to-pet-store
pipeline in the city and would protect unsuspecting people from the risk of buying sick puppies
and becoming locked into predatory loans with extremely high interest rates.
The horrific conditions in puppy mills are well known as the dogs live in cramped cages with little
exercise or vet care. Puppy mills and the pet stores who sell their puppies are in business to make
money and treat their animals like inanimate objects. There are responsible breeders in WA state and
more importantly there are many shelters filled with animals looking for loving homes.
It’s long past time to stop the pet over overpopulation problem and regulatory changes need to be
made to encourage people to adopt, not shop. Why don’t pet stores team up with local shelters to get
their healthy, neutered/spayed animals adopted into a loving home instead of continuing to make
profits at the animals’ and their new owners’ expense?
For the animals,
Gayle Janzen
