Hello, Danielle,
Please distribute my comments to the planning commission in advance of the meeting on 12/15.
Thank you for all the hard work the planning commission has done researching Puppyland. By now, you all have learned
more than you ever wanted to about puppy mills and this store’s business model. As a Renton resident, I am thrilled to
hear that a humane ordinance will be recommended to the Renton City Council.
An earlier version of a potential recommendation to city council included a lot of difficult to enforce rules, regulations,
and stipulations, taxing an already very busy city staff. I am grateful you have recognized the difficulties the original draft
would create, and applaud the plan to pass a humane ordinance.
This issue has been before the planning commission since March; during these 9 months over 850 puppies have been
imported. Time is of the essence as the longer the sale of puppies continue, the longer the misery continues for the dogs
left behind, and the more Renton residents who are locked into high interest loans. Are all of you aware that Puppyland
has started a non profit? Their articles of incorporation states that their purpose is "to provide financial assistance to the
underprivileged for their personal pets and medical care by raising donations and holding fundraisers with local
businesses”. So, to clarify‐ Puppyland sells people dogs with huge interest rates, and now plans to organize fundraisers
with other local businesses to help the purchasers provide proper medical care for the puppies, many of which require
extensive medical intervention.
A comprehensive humane ordinance which bans the sale of puppies in the store is truly the one and only way to stop
contributing to the suffering and neglect in puppy mills, and to protect Renton consumers.
You have made an incredibly smart, educated decision regarding this business. The decision to proceed with a full
humane ordinance will be well received and appreciated by the citizens of Renton.
Happy Holidays
With gratitude,
Jill Servais
