THE FOLLOWING WAS NOTED:
AESI was onsite at 10:30 this morning to observe the foundation excavation for the Lot 8 ADU building. Upon arrival, we
met with Mark Seek of Tiger Mountain Homes.
Lot 8 ADU Building Foundation Subgrade, Permit #B21005557-V2:
Prior to our arrival, the contractor excavated approximately 30 feet by 40 feet for the Lot 8 ADU building foundation,
which upon our arrival was up to 10 feet deep below surrounding grade. An access ramp for the excavator was in the
southwest corner of the excavation.
The foundation area was over-excavated to remove old fill soil, an underlying black, organic-rich material and wet, loose
native soil. The excavation exposed medium dense (based on observations with a ½ inch diameter, steel soil probe),
native, brown and gray, silty sand with some gravel that was suitably firm for fill placement. We were informed that they
planned to use approximately 7 feet of 2 to 4-inch size recycled concrete (spalls) followed by approximately 2 feet of 1 ¼”
minus recycled concrete to re-establish their foundation subgrade. Some of the spalls had been placed in the western
portion of the excavation.
While onsite, we observed the contractor remove some sloughed and left-over loose soil from the bottom of the
excavation, as requested. They also removed some of the existing spalls for us to observe the underlying soil. The
contractor started placing spalls in the eastern half of the excavation prior to our departure. The spalls were being
tamped down with the bucket of the excavator every 2 to 3 feet thick, as requested to create a tight mass of unyielding
material. We returned later this afternoon and observed the compacted spalls to be in a firm and unyielding condition.
The contractor plans to place and compact the 2 feet of capping material of 1-1/4” minus concrete recycle on Monday.
We will return then for a final observation of the compacted material.
