Upon arrival, we met with Mark Seek of Tiger Mountain Homes. Prior to our arrival, the contractor excavated approximately 4 to 7 feet below existing grade for the 20-foot by 26-foot ADU building. The excavation was deepened from the building area to remove old fill soil, black, organic-rich material and wet, loose native soil. The excavation exposed medium dense to dense (based on observations with a ½ inch diameter, steel soil probe), native, brown and gray, silty sand with some gravel that was suitably firm for fill placement. We were informed that they planned to use approximately 3 to 6 feet of structural fill consisting of 2 to 4-inch size, recycled concrete (spalls) capped by 1 to 2 feet of 1 ¼” minus recycled concrete to re-establish their foundation subgrade. The contractor will continue to tamp the spalls with the excavator bucket every 2 feet thick to create a tight mass of unyielding spalls followed by compacting the top recycled material with a jumping jack in maximum 1-foot-thick lifts. We will return for a final observation of the compacted material. Lot 7 ADU excavation upon arrival, looking W.
