Based on our conversation, the over-excavated building area removed old fill soil, an underlying black, organic-rich material, and wet, loose native soil like other building excavations in the development. Due to caving issues at the end of yesterday, the contractor planned to temporarily backfill against the eastern cut slope with soil, as recommended. They also requested that we make a site visit this morning. Upon our arrival today at 7:45am, we observed that the excavation was up to 11 feet deep below surrounding grade. An access ramp for the excavator was in the southwest corner of the excavation. We also observed soil stockpiled against the eastern, temporary cut slope to help reduce caving beyond the excavation towards Lot 9. Native, suitably firm sediment was observed in the bottom of the excavation where it was not covered by the eastern, temporary fill slope or by mud created by the excavator. While onsite, we observed three, 10-yard dump trucks unload 2 to 4-inch size recycled concrete (spalls) directly into the northern end of the excavation. The spalls were placed on native sediment consisting of tan-brown, silty sand with some gravel. Mark with Tiger Mountain Homes informed us that they planned to have 21 more loads of spalls delivered to the site today to backfill the excavation. Mark planned to push the mud out of the flat, bottom part of the excavation and replace it with the spalls. We recommended that the spalls be tamped down every 2 feet thick with the bucket of the excavator to create a tight mass of unyielding material. We also recommended that they remove and replace short sections (10 feet wide or less) of the soil placed against the eastern cut slope to help reduce further caving and potential exposure of the Lot 9 foundation. We left the site at approximately 8:45am with plans to return later in the day. A representative from AESI returned this afternoon from 12:30 to 3:30 pm and observed placement and compaction of the spalls. The surface of the spalls were approximately 1.5 feet below footing base at the time of our arrival. We did not observe the contractor replace the temporary soil slope against the eastern cut with spalls. The operator informed us that they removed the temporary soil slope in 5-foot wide sections, replacing each section with compacted spalls before removing the next section. We understand that the contractor might lower the designed bottom of footing elevation by a couple feet and then backfill on both side of the foundation wall later.
