The contractor had excavated approximately 8’ deep from existing grade. AESI was informed that the contractor would place and compacted approximately 5’ thick of recycle concrete spalls to return to proposed subgrade. AESI observed and assessed the subgrade with a ½” diameter steel soil probe. Exposed materials consisted of silty sands. In our opinion this area was firm, unyielding, and ready for backfill with the following exception. While assessing the subgrade AESI noted a 4’ by 4’ area which was saturated and loose, AESI recommended removing approxiametly 1.5’ deep of this material until firm and unyielding material is encountered and replacing with the recycled concrete spalls. Mark Seek assured us that they will get this soft spot removed as well as remove and loose sediment which may have accumlated in the bottom of the excavation. AESI departed the site in the AM and will return upon request. Figure 1: Photo of Lot 7 building foundation excavation. Observer facing in the southeast direction.
