Grady Way CALL TO ORDER Equity, Housing, and Human Services Administrator Preeti Shridhar called the meeting of the Renton Equity Commission to order at 5:38 PM. ROLL CALL Commission Members Present: Cassandra Baddeley Lisa Davis Nicole Hill Manami Imaoka Celina Kershner Morgan Kroeger Ashok Padhi Aleja Rubalcaba Rueben Turk ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF PRESENT Armondo Pavone, Mayor Kristi Rowland, Deputy Chief Administrative Officer and Executive Services Administrator Preeti Shridhar, Equity, Housing, and Human Services Administrator Ellen Bradley-Mak, Human Resources/Risk Management Administrator Chip Vincent, Community and Economic Development Administrator Patrice Kent, Senior Assistant City Attorney Linda Moschetti-Newing, Administrative Assistant Benita Horn, Equity and Inclusion Consultant APPROVAL OF AGENDA MOVED BY BADDELEY, SECONDED BY DAVIS, COMMISSION CONCUR. CARRIED. Page 1 of 4 April 7, 2022 REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES WELCOME AND OPENING COMMENTS Mayor Pavone welcomed and thanked the Equity Commission members. He looks forward to meeting them in person at a meeting in the near future. EQUITY IN RENTON AND INTRODUCTIONS • Administrator Shridhar shared information about the Equity, Housing, and Human Services Department and provided some information about the importance of equity. • Equity and Inclusion Consultant Benita Horn introduced herself. and provided some background on Equity and Inclusion training in Renton. • Council President Ryan McIrvin introduced himself and thanked the commissioners for their participation. • Administrative Assistant Linda Moschetti-Newing facilitated introductions of the members and administrative staff in attendance. ELECTION OF OFFICERS Election of Chair Linda Moschetti-Newing, Equity, Housing, and Human Services Administrative Assistant Commissioner Padhi nominated Commissioner Rubalcaba. Commissioner Imaoka nominated Commissioner Hill. Commissioner Davis nominated herself. Administrative Assistant Moschetti-Newing invited the nominees to speak to their qualifications to serve as chair. Commissioner Rubalcaba spoke to her qualifications. Commissioners Hill and Davis withdrew their names from consideration for Commission Chair. COMMISSIONER RUBALCABA ELECTED CHAIR. Election of Vice Chair Equity Commission Chair Commissioner Padhi nominated Commissioner Hill. Commissioners Baddeley and Imaoka nominated Commissioner Davis. Chair Rubalcaba invited the nominees to speak to their qualifications to serve as vice-chair. COMMISSIONER HILL ELECTED VICE-CHAIR. UNFINISHED BUSINESS None. NEW BUSINESS a) Meeting Calendar The Commissioners agreed to conduct regular business meetings the second Tuesday or on a recurring Thursday each month from 5:30-7:30 PM. Page 2 of 4 April 7, 2022 REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES MOVED BY TURK TO MEET ON TUESDAY, CLARIFIED BY IMAOKA TO HOLD REGULAR RECURRING MEETINGS ON THE SECOND TUESDAY OF EACH MONTH FROM 5:30-7:30 PM, SECONDED BY DAVIS. COMMISSION CONCUR. CARRIED. b) Equity Commission Draft Bylaws Benita Horn, Equity & Inclusion Consultant and Patrice Kent, Senior Assistant City Attorney An explanation of the bylaws and why the Commission should conduct its business in accordance with a set of bylaws was given by staff. Senior Assistant City Attorney Kent explained the process that went into creating the bylaws and background as to why they are considered best practices. She walked through the draft Bylaws and explained the components of the document. The members were asked to review them prior to the May meeting and be prepared to discuss any next steps they would like to take or proposed edits they would like to recommend. COMMITTEE MEMBER COMMENTS Commissioner Davis asked about next steps for the Commission. Senior Assistant City Attorney Kent recommended the Commission review the draft Bylaws before the next meeting and come prepared to discuss them at the May 10 meeting. Administrator Shridhar explained staff will be compiling work items for the Commission based on input from other city departments. Commissioner Kershner asked about timeline to interact with the public. Senior Assistant City Attorney Kent and Consultant Horn explained public meetings are not currently planned. COMMITTEE CHAIR COMMENTS Vice Chair Hill and Chair Rubalcaba expressed they were happy to meet the Commissioners tonight and thanked the Commission for electing them to serve their respective roles.
