While on- site, subgrade conditions were observed near the elevator shaft location in building area D and near a series of concrete footers in building area C. Sediment and erosion control conditions were noted due to the rain (photo 3). Imported 2-½” minus crushed rock was observed being laid over 2-4” quarry spall near the Northwest corner of the building footprint (photo 4). Subgrade Observations- Building Area D Gridline A9-A10/DC-DE: The areas where fill was observed are highlighted in figure 1. On the North, East, and West sides of the elevator shaft the fill passed probe testing, but on the South side of the elevator shaft, pumping was observed, and hand probing fully penetrated the new fill with only moderate effort. Wet native soil from the site (outwash sand) was mixed in with the 2-½” minus building material, causing the high water content and pumping. Only 2-½” minus was used in the replacement material and the stability was confirmed after re- compaction. We informed CDC and Cornerstone of the results. Figure 1. The area was qualitatively observed and probed and appeared firm and unyielding. Figure 2.
