Zach Brodkey Permit No. Client/Owner Attn Requested By B21004604 Renton School District No. 403 Ed Thomson Client Engineer/Architect General Contractor Grading Contractor Weather CPL / Hutteball + Oremus Cornerstone/Kyle Continental Dirt Contractors/ Jerry Jr. Cloudy, 60’s THE FOLLOWING WAS NOTED: AESI arrived mid-morning at the request of the contractors in order to observe the aeration and compaction of lifts in the North grading area, the continuation Southward of the water main trench, and compaction of lifts surrounding the large L-shaped footings and nearby spread footings in section C of the building footprint. No new observations on MEPs were required today. North Grading Area: CDC is continuing to pull wetter than optimum soil from the stockpile and set it in 1-foot lifts over the grading area, aerating it by turning with a disc, scraping it with a dozer, and compacting it with a smooth drum vibratory roller. We observed compaction of two lifts throughout the grading area, took density tests and observed with a probe and visually. When the first lift of the day was compacted, we took a passing density test near the middle of the grading area and probed. The lift was firm and unyielding in our opinion so the next lift was added and aerated/compacted. The second lift also met required density and appeared firm under wheel loading. The results for the density tests are in Table 1. Building Section C Footing Backfill: Native soil fill was used to backfill the trenches surrounding two of the large L-shaped footings in the North end of building section C, as well as 3 of the nearby square spread footings (Figure 2). Upon completion footing backfill observed today was firm and unyielding and adequate for footing backfill in our opinion. Water Main: Excavation and backfill of the trench continued Southward throughout the day. The material being excavated and then replaced as backfill became increasingly rocky and oversized moving southward as the material for the Northern bus loop goes from native soil (weathered till) to the 2.5” minus crushed rock from the building pad and quarry spall underneath. Densometer testing was not possible due to mixing of materials and excessive oversize rock, so fill was observed by hand probing and observation of soil behavior during compaction. As on the previous day 6/28/2022, this portion of the water main trench was excavated 5 feet deep below the final subgrade. The excavated pipe bed was firm and unyielding native soil. 2 feet of 7/8” minus crushed rock pipe bedding was laid, then 3 lifts of the soil/rock mix were laid and compacted with the hoepac and the smooth drum vibratory roller to reach final subgrade.
