Parks & Recreation Department Memorandum DATE: May 31, 2022 TO: Ryan McIrvin, Council President Members of Renton City Council FROM: STAFF CONTACT: Renton Senior Citizens Advisory Board Kelly Beymer, Parks and Recreation Administrator SUBJECT: Re-Naming of the Renton Senior Activity Center The Renton Senior Citizens Advisory Board would like to recommend the re-naming of the Renton Senior Activity Center to honor Don Persson. Don helped make the Senior Center what it is today – a place of welcome, friendship, socialization, and recreation for older adults in our community. For over 20 years as a Renton City Council member, Don advocated for programs, funding and support for not only the Renton Senior Activity center, but for older adults throughout the greater Renton community. In addition, Don tirelessly volunteered in the community in multiple ways, below are just a few. • Led annual planning and implementation of the Thanksgiving Meal for 28 years at the Senior Activity Center, serving 250 seniors • 20 years served on Renton City Council • Catered multiple events; Senior Picnic, Annual Employee Appreciation event, Neighborhood picnics, and Day of Service events • Developed relationships with food distribution vendors and coordinated food drop offs to the Center of Hope (REACH) families. Don’s commitment to the older adults in our community set a path for all volunteers to follow. Thank you for your consideration of this recommendation.
