While on- site, we met with Jerry Jr. with Continental Dirt Contractors (CDC) and discussed work being done today and planned work. The sewer trench backfill had been completed prior to our arrival. CDC was installing a shallow storm line at the north end of the site this afternoon. On-site Sewer Line Trench Backfill SSMH 3 to 5: AESI used a nuclear, density-moisture gauge to test the new section of sewer backfill. Part of the trench is located in the future onsite road with most of the trench located in landscaping, as shown on Figure 1 below. We observed that the surface for much of the trench backfill was tire-rutted, surface-cracked and yielding under vehicles. We were able to penetrate 2-1/2 feet deep with a ½ inch diameter, steel soil probe. A compaction test showed less than 90 percent compaction. We discussed the soft area with Jerry, and he planned to work on it later when they come back across the area with the water main. The sandy soil was 11-15 percent moisture content and test results were less than 95% compaction. We informed CDC and determined to retest the surface of the storm trench next week. The eastern and southern portions of the storm trench will be in future sidewalk and paving. The storm pipe and backfill south of SD 9 was not completed prior to CDC finishing for the day.
