Regarding: Junction Box Conduit Fill Capacity
Description: Per WSDOT STD Plans there is a maximum allowance of conduit size allowed in
each size of Junction Box. Three each 2” conduits is the max capacity for a total of 6” of conduit
fill inside a Type 1 Junction Box, 12” max capacity for a Type 2, and 24” max capacity for a
Type 8. Based on the approved Traffic Signal Plans, there is a conduit capacity issue. The City
does not have to follow the WSDOT requirement, but in my experience uses it as a guideline.
The possible solution discussed at today’s job walk was separating conduits into “LT” lighting
junction boxes and “TS” traffic signal junction boxes. In order to accomplish this, we need to
designate wire notes as “LT” and “TS”. WCS suggests adding a wire note #14 as a 2” jumper
conduit (U-Pipe) connecting the LT and TS boxes on each corner. The purpose of this conduit is
for future pathways and should not be calculated in conduit fill.
LT wire notes will be designated as Notes #1, #2, and #13.
TS wire notes will be designated as Notes #3 thru #10.

x 1 = 3”, Wire Note #10 x 1 = 3”, and Wire Note #14x1= 2”. Total Conduit Fill = 22”
North West Pole #4 Corner Wire Notes Per J-Box
LT-Type 2 = Wire Note #1x1= 2”, Wire Note #2x1= 3”, Wire Note #13x2 = 4”, Wire Note
#14x1= 2”. Total Conduit Fill =11”

The impacts of this proposal is the addition of 3 each Type 8 J-Boxes and relocating 1 each Type
2 J-Box from the original plans. This proposal is a suggestion and conduit pathways and
placement of these boxes would need to be incorporated into the design plans.
Please confirm we understand and agree on the proposed changes. Please make any necessary
corrections to specific requirements or calculations as well as revised plans to build off. WCS is
not a design or engineering firm and only relaying the discussed solutions. We will wait for
written approval and direction to move forward.
