WITH ASCENDANCE POLE AND AERIAL ARTS
RENTON MUNICIPAL ARTS COMMISSION GRANT PROGRAM
THIS AGREEMENT, dated for reference purposes only as June 23, 2022, is by and between the
City of Renton (the “City”), a Washington municipal corporation, and Ascendance Pole and Aerial
Arts (“Beneficiary/Artist”), a Washington State Nonprofit Corporation and sets forth the terms
and conditions under which the City will provide a grant to Beneficiary/Artist under the Renton
Municipal Arts Commission, Municipal Art Fund, Grant Program (“Program”). The Program is
funded through the Renton Municipal Art Fund (RMC 2-8-7.B) (“Fund”), as authorized by the
Renton City Council on November 2, 2020, pursuant to RMC 2-8-4.C and 2-8-7.B.3.
The City and the Beneficiary/Artist are referred to collectively in this Agreement as the “Parties.”
Once fully executed by the Parties, this Agreement is effective as of the last date signed by both
parties.
RECITALS:
WHEREAS, the City of Renton recognizes and acknowledges the importance of, and benefit to
the public in, providing visual art and performance in its public works and facilities, and the
community as a whole; and,
WHEREAS, the City created the Renton Municipal Arts Commission (“Commission”) to advise the
Mayor and City Council on artistic and cultural development of the City, and to disburse money
budgeted to it for cultural arts performances and other events, art-related programs and
activities and support of artists and arts and cultural organizations, as resources allow through
the City’s Municipal Art Fund; and,
WHEREAS, the Commission established Application Criteria (Exhibit 1), issued a Call for
Application (Call for Application” at Exhibit 2), reviewed Applications (“Beneficiary/Artist’s
Application” at Exhibit 3), and established a list of Projects awarded from the Fund (“Projects
Awarded” at Exhibit 4), each Exhibit is incorporated herein by reference; and
WHEREAS, on June 7, 2022 the Commission reviewed the Beneficiary/Artist’s Application and
determined that the Beneficiary/Artist is eligible for assistance under this Program and is
promoting arts and culture in Renton.

NOW THEREFORE, in consideration of the mutual covenants and agreements herein, the
Parties agree as follows:
AGREEMENT
1.Grant Amount and Disbursement.
a.Amount. The total amount to be awarded to Beneficiary/Artist under the
Program is up to two thousand four hundred dollars ($2,400) as a
reimbursement for eligible expenses. Except as specifically provided herein,
the Beneficiary/Artist shall be solely responsible for payment of any taxes
imposed as a result of this Agreement.
b.Award Disbursement.
i.Reimbursement Request. On a monthly, or no less than quarterly basis
during any quarter in which artistic and cultural support is completed,
Beneficiary/Artist shall submit reimbursement request(s) in a format
acceptable to the City (Exhibit 5) with supporting documentation
including, but not limited to, invoices or reports demonstrating
expenses for which reimbursement is sought.
ii.Effect of Award. Other than as specified, Beneficiary/Artist
relinquishes the right to any financial proceeds in association with
City’s use or reproductions of PROJECT.
iii.Payment. Payment shall be made by City within thirty (30) calendar
days after receipt and approval by the appropriate City representative
of the invoice.
iv.No waiver. Payment for any reimbursement shall not constitute a
waiver by the City of any remedies it may have for any breach of this
Agreement by the Beneficiary/Artist.
v.Tax implications. Grant funds may be taxable. Please consult your
financial advisor/tax professional for guidance. If it is required by the
IRS, a 1099 form will be issued to the Beneficiary/Artist.
2.Scope and Performance: Beneficiary/Artist agrees to create and install artwork or
produce an event as specified in Exhibit 3 “Beneficiary/Artist’s Application” which is
attached and incorporated herein. Such scope is hereinafter referred to as “PROJECT.”
a.Prior to scheduling the installation or production, Beneficiary/Artist agrees to
discuss the contents of the proposed PROJECT with designated City staff to
address necessary Council approvals, coordination with affected City
departments, compliance with affected City regulations such as signage or
event permits, materials to be used, and/or documentation of agreements
with Beneficiary/Artist partners such as private property where the PROJECT
will be presented. These discussions may result in revision of the PROJECT as
proposed.

b.The final design will be provided to the City’s Municipal Arts Commission for
review, request for further revision as needed, and final confirmation prior to
installation or production of the PROJECT.
c.Beneficiary/Artist will be responsible for installing the PROJECT in its approved
design at the location identified in Exhibit 3.
d.Beneficiary/Artist agrees to create and install PROJECT no later than
December 31, 2022.
3.Installation on Private Property. [RESERVED]
a.According to the Application (Exhibit 3), The PROJECT will be displayed or
produced at [insert location] which is not owned by the City or a public
entity.
b.As noted in Section 2.a of this Agreement, ARTIST will provide the City with
documentation of the property owner’s agreement to host the PROJECT
including submission of all necessary permit applications to effectuate the
PROJECT. Nothing in the Agreement is intended to, nor should be construed
to, act as a guarantee that an application for a permit will be granted.
c.ARTIST agrees to inform the private property owner(s) of the obligation to
consult with CITY’s Community & Economic Development Administrator prior
to any removal or alteration of the PROJECT.
d.CITY may, at its own discretion, cooperate with the private property owner
and ARTIST in the case private property owner has reason to remove or alter
the PROJECT in the future, or if the PROJECT is impacted by wear, vandalism,
damage, or other reason, to restore or relocate the PROJECT as necessary.
4.Beneficiary/Artist’s Grants and Representations:
a.Delivery of PROJECT to City constitutes Beneficiary/Artist’s certification that:
i.PROJECT is the original work of Beneficiary/Artist;
ii.To the extent others contributed to the PROJECT, Beneficiary/Artist
assumes all responsibility and liability for any claims of right to the
PROJECT by such others;
iii. Beneficiary/Artist owns all rights to PROJECT, including having obtained
any rights that Beneficiary/Artist did not originally possess; and
iv.if PROJECT contains recognizable images of particular persons,
Beneficiary/Artist has obtained appropriate releases.
b.Beneficiary/Artist acknowledges that, except for PROJECT to which section 3 of
this Agreement applies, the PROJECT will be displayed on City-owned property
=at the discretion of the City. The City retains all right to remove, maintain,
restore, relocate, or otherwise alter the PROJECT in the future for any reason.
c.Beneficiary/Artist grants to City a non-exclusive license to graphically and
electronically reproduce PROJECT, while on display, for any and all future publicity
endeavors conducted by City, provided that any such reproduction is credited to

Beneficiary/Artist by name. City may use the Beneficiary/Artist’s photograph,
other likeness, or biography in connection with the use of PROJECT.
5. Final Report: Together with the final reimbursement request, and in a format acceptable
to the City (Exhibit 6), Beneficiary/Artist shall submit a final report detailing outcomes
related to budget, activities, objectives, and attendance as first described in the
Beneficiary/Artist’s application for the Grant.
6. Scope of Eligible Expenditures: Grant funds disbursed under this Agreement shall only be
used to pay or reimburse eligible expenses as described in the Criteria (Exhibit 1) and in
the “Program Call for Applications” (Exhibit 2)
a. Reimbursement Defined. “Reimbursement” means grant disbursement to
Beneficiary/Artist upon receipt by the City of invoices and documentation
demonstrating eligible expenses.
b. No Duplication of Payment. No grant funds may be used to pay or reimburse
costs for expenditures for which Beneficiary/Artist has received any other
funding, whether state, federal or private in nature, for that same expense.
7. Beneficiary/Artist Responsibilities.
a. False Statement. The Beneficiary/Artist understands and acknowledges that
providing false information in the Application or on any documents submitted
to the City or its designees as part of the Beneficiary/Artist’s participation in
the Program may constitute fraud, justify termination of this Agreement,
trigger the Beneficiary/Artist’s obligation to return funds, and may be subject
to civil and/or criminal penalties and/or sanctions.
b. No Employee Relationship. The Beneficiary/Artist understands and
acknowledges that neither the Beneficiary/Artist nor any officer, employee or
agent of the Beneficiary/Artist shall be considered to be an employee of the
City, nor entitled to any benefits accorded City employees, by virtue of the
services provided under this Agreement. The City shall not be responsible for
assuming the duties of an employer with respect to the Beneficiary/Artist or
any employee of the Beneficiary/Artist.
c. Non-discrimination. During the performance of this Agreement, the
Beneficiary/Artist shall comply with all federal and state nondiscrimination
laws, including but not limited to, chapter 49.60 RCW, Washington’s Law
Against Discrimination, and 42 U.S.C. 12101 et seq., the Americans with
Disabilities Act (ADA). In the event of the Company’s noncompliance or refusal
to comply with any nondiscrimination law, regulation, or policy, this
Agreement may be rescinded, canceled, or terminated in whole or in part.
d. Sole proprietorship or Individual. If the Beneficiary/Artist is a sole
proprietorship or if this Agreement is with an individual, the Beneficiary/Artist
agrees to notify the City and complete any required form if the

Beneficiary/Artist retired under a State of Washington retirement system and
agrees to indemnify any losses the City may sustain through the
Beneficiary/Artist’s failure to do so.
8. Insurance: Beneficiary/Artist shall secure and maintain:
a. Commercial general liability insurance in the minimum amounts of $1,000,000
for each occurrence/$2,000,000 aggregate for the Term of this Agreement.
b. In the event that Work delivered pursuant to this Agreement either directly or
indirectly involve or require Professional Services, Professional Liability, Errors
and Omissions coverage shall be provided with minimum limits of $1,000,000
per occurrence. "Professional Services", for the purpose of this section, shall
mean any Work provided by a licensed professional or Work that requires a
professional standard of care.
c. Workers’ compensation coverage, as required by the Industrial Insurance laws
of the State of Washington, shall also be secured.
d. Commercial Automobile Liability for owned, leased, hired or non-owned,
leased, hired or non-owned, with minimum limits of $1,000,000 per
occurrence combined single limit, if there will be any use of Beneficiary’s
vehicles on the City’s Premises by or on behalf of the City, beyond normal
commutes.
e. Beneficiary/Artist shall name the City as an Additional Insured on its
commercial general liability policy on a non-contributory primary basis. The
City’s insurance policies shall not be a source for payment of any
Beneficiary/Artist liability, nor shall the maintenance of any insurance
required by this Agreement be construed to limit the liability of
Beneficiary/Artist to the coverage provided by such insurance or otherwise
limit the City’s recourse to any remedy available at law or in equity.
f. Subject to the City’s review and acceptance, a certificate of insurance showing
the proper endorsements, shall be delivered to the City before performing the
PROJECT.
g. Beneficiary/Artist shall provide the City with written notice of any policy
cancellation, within two (2) business days of their receipt of such notice.
9. Records: Maintenance, Access, Disclosure.
a. Records Maintained. Beneficiary/Artist shall maintain all records and accounts
with respect to all matters covered by this Agreement, including personnel,
property, financial, and programmatic records and documents.
b. Retention Period. These records shall be maintained for as long as may be
required by applicable Washington State records retention laws, but in any
case for a period of six (6) years after all funds have been expended or
returned to the City, whichever is later, to ensure proper accounting for all
funds and compliance with the Agreement.

c. Litigation or Audit. If any litigation, claim or audit is started before the
expiration of the six (6) year period provided in Section 4(b) above, the records
shall be retained until all litigation, claims, or audit findings involving the
records have been resolved.
d. Right of Access. The City, or its authorized representatives, shall have the right
of access to records (electronic and otherwise) of Beneficiary/Artist in order
to conduct audits or other investigations.
e. Subject to Disclosure. Beneficiary/Artist acknowledges that records may be
subject to disclosure under the Public Records Act, Ch. 42.56 RCW.
i. To the full extent the City determines necessary to comply with the
Washington State Public Records Act, Beneficiary/Artist shall make a
due diligent search of all records in its possession or control relating to
this Agreement and the PROJECT, including, but not limited to, e-mail,
correspondence, notes, saved telephone messages, recordings,
photos, or drawings and provide them to the City for production.
ii. In the event Beneficiary/Artist believes said records need to be
protected from disclosure, it may, at Beneficiary/Artist’s own expense,
seek judicial protection. Beneficiary/Artist shall indemnify, defend, and
hold harmless the City for all costs, including attorneys’ fees, attendant
to any claim or litigation related to a Public Records Act request for
which Beneficiary/Artist has responsive records and for which
Beneficiary/Artist has withheld records or information contained
therein, or not provided them to the City in a timely manner.
iii. Beneficiary/Artist shall produce to the City for distribution any and all
records responsive to the Public Records Act request in a timely
manner, unless those records are protected by court order. The
provisions of this section shall survive the expiration or termination of
this Agreement.
10. Publications. Any publications produced with funds from this Agreement must display the
following language: “This project is being supported, in whole or in part, by a grant from the
City of Renton.”
11. Disclaimer by the City. The City expressly disclaims any and all responsibility or liability to
Beneficiary/Artist or third persons for the actions of Beneficiary/Artist or third persons
resulting in death, bodily injury, property damages, or any other losses resulting in any way
from the performance of this Agreement or any other losses resulting in any way from the
performance of the Agreement, or any subcontract thereto. This Agreement does not in any
way establish an agency relationship between or among the City and/or Beneficiary/Artist.
12. Expenses Incurred in Excess of Program Award Funds. Beneficiary/Artist acknowledges that
any expenses incurred in excess of Program Award Funds are the Beneficiary/Artist’s sole
responsibility and will not be paid by the City.

13. Repayment of Funds. If any funds provided to Beneficiary/Artist were used in a manner that
is not consistent or allowable as outlined in this Agreement, Beneficiary/Artist shall return
funds to City in the amount determined to be ineligible. Beneficiary/Artist further agrees that
it is financially responsible for and will repay the City any and all indicated amounts following
an audit exception which occurs due to Beneficiary/Artist’s failure, for any reason, to comply
with the terms of this Agreement. This duty to repay the City shall not be diminished or
extinguished by the termination of the Agreement.
14. Termination. The City reserves the right to terminate this Agreement at any time, with or
without cause by giving ten (10) calendar days’ notice to the Beneficiary/Artist in writing.
In the event of such termination or suspension, Beneficiary/Artist waives any right to un-
distributed portions of the award.
15. Conflict of Interest.
a. Beneficiary/Artist designees, agents, members, officers, employees,
consultants, and any other public official who exercises or who has exercised
any functions or responsibilities with respect to the Program during his or her
tenure, or who is in a position to participate in a decision-making process or
gain inside information with regard to the Program, are barred from any
interest, direct or indirect, in any grant or proceeds of the Program, or benefit
there from, which is part of this Agreement at any time during or after such
person's tenure.
b. The City’s Code of Ethics and Washington State law prohibit City employees
from soliciting, accepting, or receiving any gift, gratuity or favor from any
person, firm or corporation involved in a contract or transaction. To ensure
compliance with the City’s Code of Ethics and state law, the Beneficiary/Artist
shall not give a gift of any kind to City employees or officials.
c. Beneficiary/Artist also confirms that Beneficiary/Artist does not have a
business interest or a close family relationship with any City officer or
employee who was, is, or will be involved in selecting the Beneficiary/Artist,
negotiating or administering this Agreement, or evaluating the
Beneficiary/Artist’s performance of the Work.
16. Notices: Any notice required under this Agreement will be in writing, addressed to the
appropriate party at the address which appears below (as modified in writing from time to
time by such party), and given personally, by registered or certified mail, return receipt
requested, by facsimile or by nationally recognized overnight courier service. Time period for
notices shall be deemed to have commenced upon the date of receipt, EXCEPT facsimile
delivery will be deemed to have commenced on the first business day following transmission.
Email and telephone may be used for purposes of administering the Agreement, but should
not be used to give any formal notice required by the Agreement.

17. Waiver/Conflict of Terms.
a. Any waiver by the Beneficiary/Artist or the City of the breach of any provision
of this Agreement by the other party will not operate, or be construed, as a
waiver of any subsequent breach by either party or prevent either party from
thereafter enforcing any such provisions.
b. In the event of any inconsistencies between Beneficiary/Artist proposals and
this Agreement, the terms of this Agreement shall prevail. Any
exhibits/attachments to this Agreement are incorporated by reference only to
the extent of the purpose for which they are referenced within this
Agreement. To the extent a Beneficiary/Artist-prepared exhibit conflicts with
the terms in the body of this Agreement or contains terms that are extraneous
to the purpose for which it is referenced, the terms in the body of this
Agreement shall prevail and the extraneous terms shall not be incorporated
herein.
18. Modification. This Agreement may only be amended by written agreement signed by both
Parties.
19. Conflicts. In the event of any inconsistencies between Beneficiary/Artist proposals or
Beneficiary/Artist-prepared exhibits and this Agreement, the terms of this Agreement shall
prevail.
20. Severability. In the event any term or condition of this Agreement or application thereof to
any person or circumstances is held invalid, such invalidity shall not affect other terms,
conditions, or applications of this Agreement that can be given effect without the invalid
term, condition, or application. To this end, the terms and conditions of the Agreement
are declared severable.
21. Governing Laws. Any lawsuit or legal action brought by any party to enforce or interpret this
Agreement or any of its terms or covenants shall be brought in the King City Superior
Court for the State of Washington at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent, King
City, Washington, or its replacement or successor. Beneficiary/Artist hereby expressly
consents to the personal and exclusive jurisdiction and venue of such court even if
Beneficiary/Artist is a foreign corporation not registered with the State of Washington.

22. Indemnification. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Beneficiary/Artist shall, at its cost
and expense, protect, defend, indemnify, and hold harmless the City, its directors,
officers, employees, and agents, from and against any and all demands, liabilities, causes
of action, costs and expenses (including attorneys’ fees), claims, judgments, or awards of
damages, arising out of or in any way resulting from the acts or omissions of
Beneficiary/Artist, its directors, officers, employees, or agents, relating in any way to
Beneficiary/Artist’s performance or non-performance under the Agreement.
Beneficiary/Artist agrees that its obligations under this paragraph extend to any
demands, liabilities, causes of action, or claims brought by, or on behalf of, any of its
employees or agents. For this purpose, Beneficiary/Artist, by mutual negotiation, hereby
waives, as respects the City only, any immunity that would otherwise be available against
such claims under any industrial insurance act, including Title 51 RCW, other Worker’s
Compensation act, disability benefit act, or other employee benefit act of any jurisdiction
which would otherwise be applicable in the case of such claim. These indemnification
obligations shall survive the termination of the Agreement.
23. Complete Agreement. This Agreement sets forth the complete expression of the agreement
between the Parties, and any oral representations or understandings not incorporated
herein are excluded. The Parties may execute this Agreement in any number of
counterparts, each of which shall constitute an original, and all of which will together
constitute this one Agreement.

Program Overview
Purpose
• The Renton Municipal Arts Commission’s grant
program offers grants to individuals, organizations and
community groups for arts and culture projects and
events that serve the general public in Renton.
Public Funding = Public Benefit
Projects should provide public benefit. Examples of
public benefit are:
•Free public performances, exhibitions, workshops,
screenings, or readings.
•Free scholarships to ongoing, fee-based arts
educational or training programs.
•Accommodating services that expand access and
inclusion to individuals with limited physical or
English-speaking abilities.
Funds May Be Used To:
•Produce one-time performances, exhibits,
special events or programs that bring arts or
cultural experiences to Renton residents.
•Provide opportunities for independent artists
to develop and present new work in all
mediums.
•Improve arts and cultural opportunities for
artists and audiences from diverse
communities.
•Participatory and educational opportunities
for youth, multicultural, seniors, and special
populations.
•Increase access to arts and cultural events
by providing discount tickets and/or free
educational programs.
•Projects that are not: located in Renton;
primarily benefit Renton residents; or are not
offered free of charge, or at reduced rates to
the extent possible;
•Projects that are not open to the public;
•Projects that have already been completed;
•Projects that support or oppose a specific
interest such as a particular business,
political, or religious viewpoint or
organization;
•Capital construction projects;
•Projects that use the Grant funds to provide
cash awards to individuals;
•Projects which preclude reasonable access
by the general public, such as in a location
not open to the general public, or for which
membership is required, or admission
charges cannot be reduced or waived for
accessibility

are reviewed on a competitive basis according to the
overall purpose of the program and the criteria for
eligible organizations. Incomplete applications submitted

Funding
Generally, the maximum award is $10,000 and the
minimum award is $500. However, the Arts Commission
may recommend greater or lesser amounts.
Timing of Projects
Projects must take place during 2022 and should be
completed by December 15, 2022.
Payment
Payment will be made at the end of the project.
Exceptions may be made, depending on circumstances
and City policy. The funding recipient will turn in
invoice(s) and a final report to the Arts Commission for
reimbursement. Invoices and final reports are due by
December 16. Checks are normally mailed within 30
days of the invoice date and receipt of completed
paperwork.

funding for an art project or cultural event
•Independent Artists, Arts and Cultural

Renton Municipal Arts Commission accepting 2022 grant applications
Deadline for application for projects occurring March through June Wednesday, February 16, 2022.
RENTON, WA – Renton Municipal Arts Commission is accepting grant applications to fund 2022 arts and
culture projects in Renton. Funding is available for art, cultural and heritage projects that serve residents and
visitors in Renton. The program also encourages innovative projects that showcase Renton’s cultural diversity,
increase our understanding of ourselves as individuals and as a society, and inspire new forms of creative
participation and growth opportunities, particularly for under-served groups.
The Commission is currently accepting proposals for the 2022 Arts Grant Program, which supports projects
that forward the Commission’s goal to enrich and increase participation and awareness of the cultural and
artist community and advocate for arts education at all levels. The RMAC grant program offers grants to
individuals, organizations and community groups for arts and culture projects and events that serve the public
in Renton.
Awards range from $500 to $10,000 and two rounds of funding will be offered in 2022. Applications for the
first round, intended to fund projects that take place between March and June 2022 are due Wednesday,
February 16, 2022. Grant awards will be announced by March 15, 2022 and projects must be completed by
December 15, 2022.
The commission will host two virtual grant Q&A sessions via Zoom on Thursday, February 3 from 12pm to 1pm
and Monday, February 7 from 7pm to 8pm. The Q&A session is an opportunity to meet members of the grants
committee, ask questions, and connect with other applicants. The Q&A session is casual with no pre-
registration required.

This year we are seeking to expand our scholarship program to be able to offer continued support to awardees as well as offer
scholarships to new applicants. With the financial hardships brought on by Covid, the need for these scholarships has increased
drastically, and we find ourselves in the unfortunate position of having to turn away many deserving applicants each quarter. With
your help, we will be able to ensure that more members of the community are able to access our programming. With these funds,
we would like to offer scholarships to new applicants each quarter, as well as continued support scholarships to previous
awardees who wish to continue but are still experiencing financial hardship.

2019 Q1 Scholarship Recipients - Nkosazana
What drew you to Ascendance?
I was actually checking out a shop that had opened nearby and
stumbled across the studio. I was genuinely excited about this find
because I live so close and my current studio was further away. Talk
about fate!
Tell us about your decision to apply for scholarship and the
outcome of it.
I opted to apply for the scholarship program at Ascendance for two
reasons. First, it was the first time I’ve heard of a studio so invested in
the community that they made it a priority to make the Aerial Arts
accessible to everyone. The second reason was because I had just
been furloughed by the government and had to start considering
cutting out my extracurricular activities. With the uncertainty of
when I would be paid again I had to put living expenses first which
was unfortunate because although I had just recently started at the
studio I already felt as though I belonged. From the instructors to the
kick butt students you feel instantly apart of the “family”.
How was your experience in classes?
Every instructor is different and so is every class but, that’s what
makes the Aerial arts so exciting - how dynamic it is. Regardless of
what class you attend and who the teacher is one thing you can
always expect is to come out of class more accomplished than when
you went in. I have a ball every single class because the energy of the
space is so inviting but the classes are also challenging.
What are your pole/aerial goals?
Recently I went to a competition and saw how much fun it seemed
to perform in front of a crowd. My goals are constantly changing but
I think i would like to try my hand at competing within the year
because, why not!
What has been the most challenging to learn?
To be patient with myself and my body. Pole is a journey and
sometimes you have to realize you aren’t going to get a move down
perfectly in one class. It takes patience and every body is different.
Yes some people may very well nail it but remember to be kind to
yourself and realize your journey is your own.
What would be your advice to students who wants to try
pole/aerial/dance?
I get so many questions about the aerial arts and I tell just about
everyone the same thing TRY IT. That’s it because you never know
you needed something until you try it. I’ve become more in tune
with my body, sensuality and have gotten so much stronger both
mentally and physically since beginning pole. I’m not sure what you
will get out of the experience but I do know it will be something
positive.

What drew you to Ascendance?
Looking for a place that has professional teachers, nice community,
positive people and fun workout. Ascendance is the place with all
these criteria that I need! And I was looking to try new things, like
Pole fitness, Ariel Yoga, and Lyra. Things that people are curious but
never have motivate to try it, and I am now doing it!
Tell us about your decision to apply for scholarship and the
outcome of it.
Based on financial need, and looking for ways to get my skills
improve. In financially, this scholarship helps me tons that I do not
have the financial stress so I can focus on skill improvement. And as a
first enrolled student, I might give up after the first failure of class.
The scholarship reminds me the commitment that I have, and
instructor keep reminds me that no one success in the first try. In
addition, the support and positive energy from all the instructors has
make me stronger. And from doing pole fitness has make a big
difference, that I start love working out more than I thought, and I
am now more toned up than before I used to. The most important
thing is I met a group of girls who also love pole fitness as I do, which
makes me like working out just much more fun. Not just working
out, but achieving the same goal with other girls.
How was your experience in class?
Class within Ascendance is fun and positive. Instructors are all very
helpful and professional that not just teaching you skills, but also
sharing the safety knowledge, and leading you to find your own style
of dance. I can confidently tell my friends this is the best gym place
I've ever had, and I believe everyone will love it once you start here.
Instructor advice professionally and team encourage each other for
better and harder skills.
What are your pole/aerial goals?
For a long term goal, I would like to be a pole/aerial performer. I
would like to share the knowledge and spirit to everyone that pole
and aerial is not because I want to be a stripper or to work at a circus.
I want to tell everyone I've found my favorite workout! Nothing is
impossible unless you have tried it. If you think I am trying for being
a stripper, maybe you should try once and you will know it is the
whole body fitness and build up in self-confident. And I bet you will
love it and get addicted to it!
What has been the most challenging to learn?
Climbing and flow. Climbing is like strength, as I have never work out
and do not have any strength at all. It was frustrating to keep failing
from climbing, but I never give up, and I can see the difference by
time and every time I do it. For flow is more like the confidence and
smooth flow of dancing. I have no experience in dance at all, and
dance flow is another difficult issue for me. The only thing I could say
is, practice make perfect. After doing more class from Ascendance, I
am now more confident in dancing. The most important thing is not
just improving the dancing skills, but I do enjoy every moment in
every class!
What would be your advice to students who wants to try
pole/aerial/dance?
Never give up to things that you like! You never know if you never
tried or experience it! You will see the difference and I bet you will
love it! Come and join us, and I'm sure that you will love this workout
and community!
2019 Q2 Scholarship Recipient Nettie
What drew you to Ascendance?
I have literally been to EVERY aerial/pole studio in western
Washington, and even some in Portland. I’ve also literally worked
with tons of pole, aerial, and flexibility trainers/instructors over the
years. It is my honest opinion, that Ascendance has taken the best
instructors throughout the state and assembled them into one
studio location. Not only am i confident, through my ongoing
training relationships with these individuals, that Ascendance has
the best team of qualified instructors...but the studio itself is one of
the best designed, as well as being the newest. On top of that, the
studio is one of the most affordable, and what little it might cost in
excess to some other studios, it makes up for in quality of trainers,
class content, environment/atmosphere, and more. Plus, this studio
is conveniently located closer to me than any other studio in the
state.
Your decision to apply for scholarship and the outcome of it.
I decided to apply for the studio scholarship because of a lack of
financial resources. I was the recipient of the spring quarter
scholarship. I’m very grateful. I decided to focus my class efforts
towards the Lyra and was able to do my first student showcase,
which has always been a goal of mine.
How was your experience in class?
I always enjoy my classes at ascendance. All of the instructors and
other studio members/clients are very kind, supportive, and fun to be
with. I always learn something new, and always challenged while
having a great time.
What are your pole/aerial goals?
After a 2.5 year shoulder injury recovery, I’ve taken a few pole classes
to start getting back into pole. But, my focus has been on learning
more with the Lyra, becoming more fluid and confident with it, and
rebuilding my strength. I look forward to doing more showcases in
my future, and want to perform and/or compete (I’ve done neither so
before).
What has been the most challenging to learn?
I choose to confront my fears and push past my limitations. I have
been working on getting into higher hoops, working on the top bar
of the Lyra, and doing things in the span set. I am afraid of heights,
spinning, and falling. Sometimes these things trigger my anxiety and
it takes me longer to be able to learn these new things. Thankfully,
Ascendance has wonderful instructors that make me feel safe even
when my anxiety is working against me. After a long injury recovery,
it’s also sometimes hard for me to do things that require a lot of
rotator cuff strength. I could literally lift ZERO pounds for four
months after my injury. Put the two of these challenges together
and one very difficult trick I have not been able to attain is the
inverted man on the moon. I see many other people get this in the
first class they attempt it, so I am sure it’s something I’m going to
have to work on mentally. And, that brings up another challenge,
remembering that it’s ok to take my time with things.
What would be your advice to students who wants to try
pole/aerial/dance?
Many people do not think they have the strength to do this. I literally
had ZERO strength and I am doing it. So can you.
2019 Q3 Scholarship Recipient Cheyanne
What drew you to Ascendance?
I have been searching the greater Seattle area for a pole studio that
had both a strong sense of community as well as diverse class
offerings. Ascendance has a ton of different classes, as well as a
diverse group of instructors all with different dance backgrounds.
One of my goals is to be a well-rounded dancer and Ascendance
definitely honors all "genres" of pole from contemporary, to
acrobatic/gymnastic to exotic.
Your decision to apply for scholarship and the outcome of it.
I applied for a scholarship because I haven't been able to afford to
take the number of classes I needed to push my abilities to progress.
Previously, I had been taking a few classes a month, but for me, this
wasn't enough to see improvement in my skillset. The scholarship
program was a great opportunity to become a part of a beautiful
new studio without financial barriers hindering my progress.
How was your experience in class?
My very first class at Ascendance was a class full of encouraging, fun
and silly people. Each student and instructor have been incredibly
welcoming and supportive. It’s so fun to cheer each other on and
celebrate each other's achievements in class.
What are your pole/aerial goals?
Initially I started pole because I needed a new hobby, and quickly fell
in love with the empowerment and strength that comes with it. My
goals are to continue to gain confidence in my dance, and work on
strength and flexibility to get into those crazy inverted split moves
someday.
What has been the most challenging to learn?
In general, engagement. For the longest time, I did not understand
how to engage my shoulders, and still am working on keeping my
core active during training. It really makes all the difference in the
world when your whole body is paying attention, and finally that one
elusive move just "clicks".
What would be your advice to students who wants to try
pole/aerial/dance?
Absolutely do not be afraid, intimidated, or self-conscious. Pole and
aerial are such empowering sports and really are for any body/
"ability" level. The pole community, especially at Ascendance is full of
people who will always cheer you on and lift you up both figuratively,
and sometimes literally.
2019 Q3 Scholarship Recipients - Erin!
“Ascendance is my "Happy Place!" I came to the studio looking for a
new challenge, and a place to explore my passion for dance. And I
did! After my first class, I was hooked and couldn't get enough. The
studio has given me a new way of expressing myself, confidence and
a sense of community and belonging. As a scholarship recipient, I
was able to truly immerse myself into pole technique and explore
the many styles each teacher had to offer. A goal I had at the start of
my pole journey was to perform and compete. With only 9 months
under my Pleaser platforms, I will be competing in a doubles routine
at PSO (Pole Sports Organization) this November. This was a goal I
had months ago in December and it's finally here. Once I finish the
competition, I'm sure I will be inspired to set a new goal but for now,
I'm to grind till November.
If I had to give someone toying with the idea of taking a pole class
advice, I would say "DO IT"! Find a studio that fits your personality
and go for it. If you hate it, it only cost you a few bucks or nothing if
your first class was free. But if you love it, the friends, community,
and self-empowerment will last a long time.”
2019 Q4 Scholarship Recipient - Hannah
“I’m a self-employed digital artist by trade, and in the course of my
work I spend a lot of time in my head and on a screen, leaving me
feeling very disconnected from my body. I’ve dabbled in dance and
performance arts throughout my life but have always been too shy
to perform on my own and largely discouraged from pursuing
anything further knowing it wasn’t to be a professional pursuit. I’ve
come to realize that I crave physicality and movement as both a
complementary release from more static work, and another means
of creative expression that informs and reframes my perspective as a
professional artist. Being freelance grants me more flexibility with
my time, but also often robs me of the opportunity to surround
myself with other creatives, so I’ve taken up exploration of dance and
aerial arts to both reconnect with my physical self and to be a part of
a community of awesome creative people again.
When Ascendance opened near my home I was struck by how
encouraging and welcoming an atmosphere they had created at the
studio, and my experiences in all the classes I’ve taken have been
just that. Finding myself improving each and every week has been so
encouraging and having a sense of purpose and direction in my
physical training is extremely motivating. Both pole and aerials are
challenging and fun in ways I haven’t found since I was a kid - it has
been a long time since I explored expressive movement this way
without feeling incredibly self-conscious and inhibited. For me, the
most challenging thing to learn has been trust in myself, to let go of
self-consciousness and immerse myself in playful movement again
without the fear of looking silly. This has also been the most
rewarding thing to learn, and the one that makes learning
everything else so much easier and more fun.
If I could give advice to anyone considering dance, pole or aerials,
whether for the first time or after a long hiatus, it would be this
lesson I learned from my own years’-long hesitation: the time spent
debating over whether it’s worth trying is time that could be spent
trying it. You’ll never know what you can do until you start.”
2020 Q1 Scholarship Recipient - Moonyeka
We had the opportunity to get to know Moonyeka more this quarter
as a Q1 Scholarship recipient. Check out her interview below! She’s
one incredible human and we are excited about partnering with her
on future events at Ascendance.
My name is Moonyeka. I’m a Filipinx femme movement based
storyteller who who utilizes art creation, teaching, and organizing to
realize a world that honors my communities' stories in a way that is
healing, celebratory, and generative.
What drew you to Ascendance?
A friend of mine mentioned Ascendance. I’ve been to a few pole
studios and was having trouble vibing well with most of them. I
actually was recommended to Ascendance because there was a
scholarship program. I generally cannot sustain or afford my own
personal dance training beyond self-training.
How was your experience in class?
My favorite thing about Ascendance is I feel a little less alienated
here. This is the only studio I’ve been to where I felt there was more
presence of (qt)poc folks. I also get a little nostalgic cuz I grew up in
the South End/South King County areas.
What are your pole/aerial goals?
My first goal was honestly to climb to the top! Beyond that I just
wanted a space where I was exploring my movement in new ways.
I’ve been performing, battling, teaching, choreographing, and
creating for a while and my cup needed to be filled with ways to
replenish my own erotic and creative energy.
What has been the most challenging to learn?
Beyond the approach of the move, movement, dance and
embodiment have always been a way for me to be in conversation
with myself around the discomfort in my body. My discomfort is
rooted in systemic oppression, trauma, and projected narratives
about what queer femmes of color need to move and act like. It gets
distressing to parse out who I am moving for, why I am moving.
When I am in class the narratives of shame and the response to
freeze can show up because I am moving these narratives quite
literally in my body. While it is challenging, I appreciate having
another opportunity to engage with these narratives through new
ways of moving.
What would be your advice to students who want to try
pole/aerial/dance?
Be gentle with yourself. Integrating new ways of moving with your
bodymind takes a lot of time and patience. I encourage folks to talk
to themselves as compassionately as you would with a loved one. I
also encourage folks to set intentions, ground, and reflect on what
medicine they seek within movement and dance-based practices.
