City of Renton Receives $6.5 million in federal funding for 3 transportation
projects
Funding for improved transportation, trail expansion, and increased handicapped access
Renton, WA – The City of Renton has been awarded just over $6.5 million in federal funding for three
major transportation projects from the Puget Sound Regional Council (PSRC).
“This funding allows us to move forward with projects that are integral not only to our on-going
development of downtown, but to our goal of providing a safe and vibrant community,” said Mayor
Denis Law. “These grants are the culmination of months of hard work by city staff working with the
regional council.”
The city will receive:
$3,850,000 to change Williams Avenue South and Wells Avenue South from one-way to two-
way traffic, improving traffic flow into and out of the downtown civic core. Project design will
begin in 2017, with construction scheduled to start in 2019. The total cost is estimated at $6
million.
$1,694,279 million to extend the Lake Washington Loop Trail from Renton Stadium, along Logan
Avenue, across the Cedar River, to Airport Way and eventually to Rainier Avenue South. This
project will improve both pedestrian and bicycle safety. Design work will be completed in 2017
with construction scheduled for completion in 2018. The total cost is estimated at $3.5 million.
$1,020,700 to improve sidewalk ramps on Rainier Avenue South for those citizens who are
physically challenged. The project will include grinding and an overlay of the existing
pavement. Design work will begin in 2017, with construction scheduled for 2018. The total cost
is estimated at $1.8 million.
The PSRC Executive Board voted in October to award these federal funds to priority projects designed to
improve local and regional transportation issues. Final approval by the Governor and federal funding
agencies is expected in early 2017.
Projects were chosen on their ability to meet local needs, support the region’s overall growth strategy
and align with Transportation 2040, the long-range transportation plan. The money for the three Renton
projects are part of a $5.6 billion Transportation Improvement Program for 2017-2020.
