City of Renton Recognized for Environmental and Public Works Projects
RENTON, WA -- The City of Renton has received two awards from state associations.
The city has been recognized as a Green Star leader from Puget Soundkeeper and Washington
Environmental Council. Green stars, established for the first time, were given to cities and counties
that embraced a healthy, more sustainable future by initiating low-impact development as the
“preferred and commonly used approach.”
While half of Puget Sound cities missed the mark, Renton stood out and embraced a comprehensive
effort for its permit process by convening an internal review team from multiple departments, who
reviewed all four corners of municipal codes along with comprehensive plans, shoreline management
plans, and design standards. Hebe Bernardo and Kristina Lowthian from Public Works and Angie
Mathias from Community and Economic Development served as the project leads. Thanks also to
members of Renton’s Planning Commission who were involved in all aspects of the project and
process.
Low-impact development techniques include rain gardens, buffers around paved areas, permeable
pavement, and preservation of existing plantings on development sites. Studies have shown these are
proven methods to help reduce pollution and
flooding by incorporating natural drainage solutions
that filter and slow stormwater.
The city’s Duvall Avenue NE pavement preservation
project was also recognized by the Washington state
chapter of the American Public Works Association as
the best asphalt work in the state in 2016. The
project involved resurfacing Duvall Avenue NE from
NE 4th Street to NE 10th Street, which extends the
life of the pavement an estimated 12 to 15 years.
