will be regional model
The Sunset area is undergoing an
exciting revitalization that has the
potential to be a model project
throughout the region. It will be a
prime example on how to take a
depressed community and transform
it into a quality, safe neighborhood
that serves everybody.
Substandard housing units are being
demolished to make room for new,
market-rate housing and retail stores,
as well as quality affordable housing
units for low-income families and
seniors. Anchored by a beautiful new
library, a new 3-acre park, bike and
walking paths and other vital services
are all part of the redevelopment plan.
This multi-million dollar project
is possible through a partnership
between the city, Renton Housing
Authority, Renton School District, King
County and federal agencies, as well
as significant investments from the
private sector.
On Sunday, Councilmember Ryan
McIrvin and I, along with our wives,
participated in the ribbon-cutting celebration of the new Viet Wah Asian Market in the heart of the
Sunset business district. We were joined by Lt. Governor Brad Owen and State Senator Bob Hasegawa.
Viet Wah owner Duc Tran and his family moved their store across Sunset Boulevard into space
formerly occupied by St. Vincent de Paul. They invested several million dollars to remodel the vacant
space, converting it into a very nice market that will serve the entire Highlands community. Duc has
been a true leader in Renton’s business community, serving on the board of the Renton Chamber of
Commerce and the Mayor’s Inclusion Task Force. The commercial district is an important component
to the revitalization of the Sunset Neighborhood, and I’m confident that Duc’s investment is the
beginning of more commercial redevelopment that we will see during the next year.

THE BEAUTIFUL NEW RENTON HIGHLANDS LIBRARY
DID YOU KNOW?Nishiwaki students visit City Hall
I was very pleased to welcome students from our Sister City of
Nishiwaki, Japan, on Thursday.
Sister City relationships are vital as we work to understand and
appreciate different cultures. Opportunities like these allow us to
participate in educational, cultural, and professional exchanges.
Nishiwaki, which is about 350 miles from Tokyo, has been a Renton
Sister City since 1969. We’re excited as we plan to celebrate our
50th anniversary in 2019. Renton also has a Sister City relationship
with Cuautla, Mexico which began in 2001.
Day of Service is September 10
Our seventh annual Day of Service to honor the
victims and first responders in the September
11 terrorist attacks will be September 10 from
9 a.m. – noon. We take this day to encourage
our citizens to volunteer and support charitable
causes, perform good deeds, or engage in other
service activities. There are hundreds of volunteer
opportunities in the city. To find one, please
