Renton Waste Management Customers to Receive Service Credit
Credit Compensates Customers Impacted by 2012 Waste Management Strike
RENTON: City of Renton Waste Management garbage and recycling customers will see a service credit on
their January bill thanks to a settlement recently reached by the City of Renton and Waste Management. The
credit compensates customers for Waste Management’s failure to make scheduled solid waste collections
from July 25 to August 1, 2012, due to an employee strike. The Renton City Council approved the settlement at
the January 14, 2013, regular city council meeting.
“This service credit we negotiated with Waste Management is intended to compensate our customers who
had their garbage or recyclables go uncollected during the strike in July 2012,” said Renton Mayor Denis Law.
“We had a contract with Waste Management and the extended strike forced us to seek compensation when
they didn’t fulfill their obligations with us during the strike. We are pleased to have settled this matter with
Waste Management, and look forward to continued uninterrupted solid waste services in Renton.”
Residential and commercial cart customers will see a $10 credit on their January statement , which should
arrive in mailboxes in early February. Commercial customers using containers 1 yard and above will receive a
$50 credit. This credit will be applied to active solid waste accounts impacted by the strike. Customers in the
Renton Allied Waste service area were unaffected by the Waste Management strike.
In addition to curbside collection, the City of Renton also offers customers these other recycling programs to
help reduce waste, including:
Spring Recycle Event, May 11, 2013, and Fall Recycle Event, September 7, 2013. Renton Technical
College. Both events offer recycling of materials not collected at the curbside, such as: appliances,
scrap metal, bulky yard waste, Styrofoam, and more.
Reuse It! Renton Stop & Swap, June 1, 2013. Renton Memorial Stadium. Stop & Swap is designed to
divert quality goods from our waste stream and make them available to neighbors and non-profits who
can use them.
