City Volunteer to Receive Governor’s Service Award
Renton Resident Recognized for Outstanding Contributions as a Volunteer
RENTON: Renton volunteer Raymond Kusumi is one of a select number of volunteers from across the state
being recognized by Governor Inslee and the Washington Commission for National and Community Services
(WCNCS) for his outstanding contributions as a volunteer. He is being recognized for his leadership of Renton
Emergency Communication Service (RECS) where he serves as team leader. RECS provides communications
support to the city when normal communications methods are disrupted and also maintains the city’s
Neighborhood Information Centers at schools.
“The city is fortunate to have a volunteer like Ray,” says Deborah Needham, Emergency Management
Director. “He provides excellent leadership and dedication to the volunteer groups that he serves.”
Under Kusumi’s leadership in 2012, RECS developed portable communications stations and converted a
donated aid car into a mobile communications unit. In addition to his work with RECS, he was instrumental in
getting a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program started at Hazen High School last year.
He will receive his award at the 2013 Governor’s Volunteer Service Awards Ceremony held at the Executive
Mansion in Olympia on April 25, 2013. In addition he will be recognized by the Seattle Mariners and local radio
stations at their Salute to Volunteers event held on April 25, at Safeco Field.
