The department’s Emergency Management program conducts emergency planning and also coordinates disaster response and recovery. With assistance from the AmeriCorps member, the Emergency Management program specifically addresses the education and training needs of the public related to disaster preparedness and the recruitment, training and engagement of volunteers. The selected individual will receive training to support existing volunteer and outreach programs such as Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training and Community Organizations Active in Disaster (COAD). The individual will assess the disaster preparedness needs of the community and effect positive change in the preparedness level of the community. The member will oversee a team of volunteers who disseminate culturally-specific disaster preparedness information more widely within Renton's diverse community. Applicants must be between the ages of 18-25 years of age to qualify for the AmeriCorps program and must pass a background check. The position serves from September 16, 2013, to July 31, 2014; and receives a monthly stipend of $1,125, an education benefit of $5,550 at the end of service, and full health care benefits.
