Mayor Law, Dignitaries Cut Ribbon on SW 27th St./Strander Blvd. Extension Project
RENTON: On Tuesday, June 24, 2014, Renton Mayor Denis Law and dignitaries representing state and regional
governments, funding agencies and local businesses attended the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony officially
completing the current phase of the SW 27th Street/Strander Boulevard Extension Project. The total cost of
this phase of the project is $22 million. The ceremony took place on SW 27th Street at Naches Avenue SW in
Renton.
“By completing this project we connect SW 27th Street in Renton to the Sounder commuter rail station in
Tukwila,” said Renton Mayor Denis Law. “This access to transit also provides an alternate to I-405 between I-5
and SR 167, one of the most congested stretches of highway in our state.”
This portion of the Extension Project promotes transit use and improves air quality by finally creating public
access to the Sounder commuter rail from the east and supports use of Sounder, Amtrak and other mass
transit modes, including Metro’s RapidRide F Line, which was implemented e arlier this month. Completion of
this new corridor will increase freight mobility in our area, which is essential to many businesses in the Green
River Valley, the largest industrial area in Washington State, and also the second largest distribution center on
the West Coast and fourth largest in the nation. Future phases of the SW 27th Street/Strander Blvd. project
will provide the needed links for a four to five lane arterial corridor extending from SR 167 through Renton
and Tukwila to I-5.
The project is a funding collaboration of the City of Renton, City of Tukwila, The Boeing Company, BNSF
Railway, Union Pacific Railroad, Sound Transit, the State of Washington, including the Transportation
Improvement Board (TIB), Freight Mobility Strategic Investment Board (FMSIB) and the Washington State
Department of Transportation (WSDOT), and the US Department of Transportation.
