HomeMy WebLinkAbout080116_North Highlands Community Garden FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 1, 2016 City of Renton Contacts: Preeti Shridhar, Deputy Public Affairs Administrator, 425-430-6569 Maryjane Ortiz, Recreation Manager, 425-430-6615 City of Renton officially opens North Highlands Community Garden CVS Pharmacy-funded project will benefit local non-profits Renton, WA – Residents of Renton’s North Highlands community celebrated the grand opening of the North Highlands Community Garden at a ribbon cutting ceremony on July 28. City of Renton Mayor Denis Law and representatives from CVS Pharmacy cut the ribbon to officially open the project. The project was funded by a $10,000 grant from CVS Pharmacy and completed by several volunteer groups including employees representing Symetra and The Boeing Company, Eagle Scout Kane Anderson, Sustainable Renton, Seattle Tilth, and students from Renton and Hazen high schools. The City of Renton will expand the program by partnering with Renton Housing Authority and local non-profits to provide low cost classes on gardening, food preservation and healthy cooking classes. The Garden consists of 13 galvanized garden plots, which are used by a cross section of local non- profits, a preschool, seniors and families. The plots come in two sizes, 2’x4’ and 2’x6’. Gardeners are able to enjoy their own produce which can be flowers, vegetables or fruits.
