RENTON MUNICIPAL ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES Tuesday, December 5,2017 Members Present Mitch Shepherd, Mary Clymer, Adrienne La Faye, Samantha Goetz-Granquist, Neil Sheesley, Ben Andrews, Marsha Rollinger, Kim Patterson, Su Gow, Dave Samek and Evelyn Reingold Excused Absence: Bill Huls Staff Present: Elizabeth Higgins, Staff Liaison -City of Renton Department Community & Economic Development,Jim Collum, City of Renton Department of Community& Economic Development and Chip Vincent, City of Renton Department of Community& Economic Development Guests Present: Mike Simpson, Applicant or RMAC position—Retired teacher and musician (French Horn) and Director of the Renton Community Band. Call to Order: Meeting was called to order by RMAC-Chair, Mitch Shepherd at 6:04 pm. Approval of Minutes: The October 3, 2017 and November 7, 2017 minutes were approved. MSC (Sam/Adrienne) Down Town Civic Core Presentation John Collum gave a PowerPoint overview with a conference call narrative by Alex Dupey, a MIG Consultant,to discuss implementation strategies for public engagement. The presentation's intent is to reflect the diversity of what can be done with limited funds by the affected stakeholders so that downtown can become an "art hub", including alleys, as an economic attractor for downtown businesses.The plans are ambitious as well as flexible to include studio and gallery space, art & culture trails, street designs. *Way Finding Design—The blue color that corresponds with the Renton Marking Campaign had the most appeal with a "Split-wing Monument" design nod to Renton's aviation history. Also included are walking signs and interpretative panels. Correspondence and Announcements: • The Governor's Smart Communities Awards were given to members who missed the September presentation at the City Council meeting. • Other-Correspondence and event folders were circulated for individual review. 2017 Yearend Bud�et Report: • Miscellaneous unspent funds will be rolled over into the 2018 budget. MSC(Evelyn/Neil) New Business: *Galvanizing Art Projects—(New)The Benson Hills Community Project for a Utility Wrap Box will be on the corner of 116t"Ave SE & SE 168t"Ave. According to Paul Hintz Renton Senior Planner. Discussion to allocate$2500 for the project. MSC(Marsha/Adrienne) Potential Artists to be coordinated from RMAC list by Elizabeth *Seattle Film Festival Summit in Renton—During the weekend 12/08-10, several Hollywood content creators, major players and executives will be at the Renton Hyatt Regency to give local film-makers, digital and satellite producers the opportunity to pitch their ideas to persons of influence. So far, over 300 participants are pre-registered. Artistic events such as this show that there is economic viability them. Ben said that there are some vendor spots available for Saturday and Sunday where RMAC might want to hand out our survey cards. *Cascadia Poetry festival in Renton in 2019—More information after new year. *RMAC Retreat—January 2018—Potential topics for discussion will be solicited during the holidays via email.
